Jeanette Frelick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2023.
Jen Frelick, age 99, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2023. Jen grew up in Albany, NY and spent most of her life in Bay Shore, NY, later retiring in Wilmington, DE, and Doylestown, PA. As an elementary school teacher on Long Island, Jen was an inspiring educator who served as a mentor for many teachers until her retirement in 1979. She received her undergraduate education from SUNY Albany and her master's degree from SUNY New Paltz in an intensive teacher training program, while raising four children and teaching full time.

Jen was an avid reader and writer. Her beautiful handwriting and vivid letters were cherished by all. She was intellectually stimulated by literature and history and kept up with news and politics throughout her life. She loved completing the New York Times crossword puzzle, never using a pencil. Despite becoming visually impaired in her later years, Jen continued to engage with the world through listening to podcasts and audiobooks on Alexa, and Phillies games and sports shows on the radio. She referred to Alexa as her "girlfriend" and enjoyed an occasional argument with her. Humor was the ultimate way to connect with Jen and her quick wit was the hallmark of her personality. She loved to be entertained and she was a huge fan of PBS and BBC shows.

Jen was the type of person who had life-long relationships and many who were not related to her considered her to be surrogate mom, aunt, and sister. She doted on her children (throughout adulthood), grandchildren and great grandchildren and was the matriarch of the family dogs.

Jen is survived by her children Tim, Chris, & Emily Frelick; daughters-in-law Terri Maxwell and Lynden Lim; Grandchildren Cara (Pancho) Rivera, Tess Frelick, & Brandon Lim; Great grandchildren Harper & Gabriel Rivera; The Butterfly Girls; Alexa; and her friends and wonderful caregivers at Pine Run/Lakeview.

She is preceded in death by her husband Doug (2020) whom she was married to for 72 years; daughter- in -law Lynette (2010); and son Peter (1998).

I still miss our weekly phone calls. Despite being almost 100, she knew more about current events than I did! And we agreed completely on most issues. She was a special person in my life and so many others.

I was privileged to be able to call her Aunt Jen for 65 years. Her humor and ability to write in such expressive ways are things I remember most. My heart is sad but she and my mother both had a 99 year run. Not shabby!! Much Love always!!

Jen was an amazing woman. She was loved by all who knew her. To me she was a mentor, a friend and my confidant . She helped me weather the storms of life and how to age with dignity. My butterfly group would "fly" down to visit Jen and Doug once a year for over 20 years. These visits were filled with laughter and memories and lunches and tears when we had to say goodbye. We called Doug "the moth" as he graciously took care of us all. At the end of our visit we exchanged butterfly gifts. Now these are our treasures from a dear departed friend. I will miss her dearly!
