Jeanne Marie Frey (nee Schlather) (1948-2022) passed away on September 29, 2022 after a long illness.  Jeanne was a lifelong resident of Elyria, graduating from Elyria Catholic High School in 1966, and continuing her studies at the Cleveland Music Conservatory where she had the opportunity to sing with the New York City Opera and Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians.  She was a faith-filled Catholic her entire life.  Jeanne devoted her time and talent as the Music and Choir Director at St. Jude Church for more than 50 years, blessing all who heard her with her beautiful voice.  She wore many hats at St. Jude including sacristan, lector, and Eucharistic minister.  Jeanne also worked as an insurance agent for 40 years at Schlather Insurance Agency, her family's business.  Jeanne was a loving and dedicated wife to Lawrence Edward Frey, and together they raised seven children.  She enjoyed spending time gardening, playing her piano, traveling, eating good food, reading, and always filling her house with music.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Lawrence; her parents, Virginia and Bernard Schlather; and brothers, William Schlather and Robert Schlather.  Jeanne is survived by her children, Paul (Christine) Frey, Julie Warmack, Laura (Joseph) Quigley, Joseph (Lyndsey) Frey, Cheryl (James) Richards, Kristen (Anthony) Frank, and Michael (Mary) Frey; six brothers, four sisters, and 17 grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Reichlin Roberts Bollinger Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, Thursday October 6, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022 at St. Jude Church, 590 Poplar St., Elyria.

Jeanne was my mentor and guided me and supported me as a budding church musician. Now after 38 years in full time music ministry I’m so grateful for her inspiration and tutelage.
Now you and Gail can once again take your daily walks. All my love and gratitude!

When I think about Jeanne, the first thought that comes to mind is Jeanne playing the organ at St. Jude Church with little Michael sitting on the organ bench beside her. That sums up her beautiful life: devotion to her lovely family and to the Church she was so faithful to. I am so fortunate to have known her and will always cherish her friendship. Eternal rest, Jeanne.

So many memories of our 50 years working together to bring music to the congregation of St. Jude. Christmas and Easter preparations with you directing and me playing. Your positive attitude during your illness was an inspiration. Sympathy to your whole beautiful family.
