Jeffrey Beedy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 21 to Apr. 22, 2023.
Beedy With great sorrow the Beedy, Wheelock, Morrison, Smith, Moore, Howe, Jackson, and Szahun families announce the passing of our kind, brave, caring, and unimaginably loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, father-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and friend, Jeffrey Pratt Beedy.

Jeff, 72, of Brewster, MA, and Farmington, ME, left this world on Wednesday April 12, 2023.

Jeff grew up in Gardiner, Readfield, and Augusta, Maine with his sister Deidre, and their parents Dwight and Helen. He attended Kents Hill School, and later graduated from Cony High School, where he gained a reputation as a knock-out pitcher for the baseball team and a star quarterback for the football team. After high school, Jeff attended Dean Junior College, played baseball in the Cape Cod League for two seasons, and volunteered at the Special Olympics. He then continued onto University of Maine, Orono where he majored in Psychology. Jeff, an avid skier, and talented athlete, continued to follow his dreams and skied the moguls on the World Freestyle Circuit. After returning to New England, Jeff began his private school career. He went on to receive his Masters in Counseling Psychology and his Doctorate in Sports and Human Development from Harvard University. Jeff spent his 47-year career as an educator, coaching and teaching, and then as a headmaster at numerous private boarding and day schools globally. He led these communities with gentle strength and respect, and touched the lives of so many in a positive way.

Jeff's work in human development was an offering to the world. He was a published author and he founded Sports PLUS (Positive Learning Using Sports). His PLUS curriculum and programs became part of Milton Academy, Kents Hill School, New Hampton School, KIS Jeju, and others. He initiated and supported after-school programs for underserved populations in the metro-Boston area, various other US locations, as well as Greece, China, South Korea, Cyprus, and Africa. He never stopped working to make the world a better place - communicating with people worldwide about children, learning, sports, music, and moral development.

Anyone who knew Jeff also knew that he was a passionate musician. He played guitar, piano, sang, and was a talented songwriter. He shared these gifts freely with the people in his life, often bringing people together and providing inspiration through music. His friendships through music are deep and span his lifetime. As Head of School, he got a charge out of opening morning meetings with Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Goode" to make sure the day got off to a good start. Jeff and his wife Karyn shared the gift of music and often performed as a duo, or with other friends and band members over the course of their life together.

Family was a priority to Jeff. He loved nothing more than being together, making music, laughter, and making memories. He was a loving father, enjoying strong bonds with both of his daughters, Amanda and Bailey. He loved picnics by the river and swimming in Clearwater with his sister Dee Dee. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and deeply cherished those relationships. Jeff and Karyn loved hosting family gatherings for the holidays and, any days. It meant the world to Jeff to be together with family.

When Jeff wasn't traveling for work and pleasure, he spent his time walking on the beaches, playing music, gardening, fishing, and connecting with family at his home in Brewster, Massachusetts, and at "The Farm," the beloved family home in Farmington, Maine. He was an expert skier and turned heads at Titcomb, Sugarloaf, and Saddleback - his dear home mountains.

Jeffrey Beedy was an extraordinary man, that led an extraordinary life, and he will be missed deeply.

Jeff was predeceased by his parents Dwight Beedy, and his mother Helen Sanborn.

Jeff was survived by his wife and partner of 17 years Karyn Beedy, his daughter Amanda Morrison (Jim), daughter Bailey Smith (Brian), grandchildren Ellawynn, Zane, Ethan, Mason, and Ava, sister Deidre Wheelock, niece Cheryl Moore (Matt), nephews Geoff Howe (Tammy) and Mike Howe (Sarah), mother-in law Margery Jackson, sister-in-law Sandra Szahun, brothers-in-law Todd Szahun (Jaime) and David Szahun (Amaya), and former wife (mother of his children) Anne Richter.

Hard to believe he is gone as he was so full of life and direction and concern for others. I knew him at Kent's Hill School '81 to '83. He taught Psychology and Sociology and did a great job to the extent that I didn't want to miss a class. He drove us to excel and when I went on to University I got A's in both subjects as it was a review of what Beeds already taught me. I am sure he had his struggles as we all do but from my teen perspective he was always calm and fair and interested. So thanks Jeff Beedy for putting in your efforts to help me and what was undoubtedly thousands of other kids make some sense of life.

So very sad to see this. "Beeds" was a great man and mentor. He always found the positives in life. I remember pitching against Brighton and, wow, I was getting rocked. Some of the hardest hit balls were flying around the field! He came out to the field, gathered the infield around him and said, "Bain is pitching his heart out, you all need to play better defense." In my mind, I am thinking, "Geez Coach, these guys are crushing the ball. What game are you watching? ". That´s the kind of man he was, always trying to bring the best out of his students. Miss you, Coach.

to the family, Jeff was my first hero. I was a post grade student from Boston mass, not sure what to expect from kids that came from wealth. Jeff told me I was here to grow as a student first and mature to become a better athlete. during the football season he told me not to play hockey, and focus on school. the next change was go from shortstop to catching, since that was the position you needed to learn.
Jeff was a constant when challenging me. I love him for it. Jeff was a great athlete, and I will miss his mind, passion for greatness, competitive spirit, and most of all, the time we had in 1978. I owe him a lot, and never got to thank him enough.

Jeff ran the alpine ski racing program at Kents Hill School, while I lead the recreational ski program in the 1980's. After many a good snowfall Jeff lined all skiers across the top of the Hill and we side slipped and packed the slope.
Jeff's infectious enthusiasm was a vibrant part of those winter afternoons. No matter how strongly those cold frigid winds blew, we could always rely on the Beed's cheerful energy to inspire skiers to take one more run and work on their ability to carve a set of perfect turns.
Those summers working at New Sport with you and the crew were another bonus. Rest easy my friend!

Wow, what a surprise and a tragic loss of Dr. Beedy, a consummate leader in college preparatory education and recreational and competitive sports. I remember the contributions that Dr. Beedy made to raise the bar on academics at New Hampton School, and to developing sound students, future leaders, and athletes of optimal fitness and sound mind. I remember skiing with Dr. Beedy in Vail, and thinking that he skied like someone 20 years junior, his age.

To Dr. Beedy's family and extended family, I send you my sincerest of condolences and sympathies, and I thank you for sharing Dr. Beedy with the students and faculty of yesteryear, and leaders of today, and tomorrow.

May Dr. Beedy Rest in Peace, and with great honor.

Wonderful person. Glad I spent two years at KHS while he was there. Funny story was his sitting on my bed in the dorm and his liking at my posters, asking why I liked heavy metal so much. I answered the power and intensity. Is was constantly intrigued with what moved people. He was always positive and always kind. Just a really great human being.

Dr. Jeff Beedy changed my Life. When he hired me to teach dance at NHS, I moved into a vibrant loving Community as a single Mom with two children. His Love for the Arts infused all of the Arts Programs with Support and Encouragement. Jeff's passion for Brain Based Learning fostered an interest in Kinesthetic Learning for me which led me to get my Masters. His Legacy lives on in all of the Lives that he touched. My Heartfelt Condolences to Karyn, Amanda, Bailey and Family. May his Memory be a Blessing.

Jeff's legacy is rich in giving back to all his communities of interest. An exceptional and special man, I know that Karyn, Amanda, and Baily can forever be very proud of what he shared with many. I was fortunate to be a friend and will always remember our conversations which mostly focused on a new idea for a program that would give others more meaningful experiences. May your spiritual journey, Jeff, be rich.

Mr. Beedy was a good guy. We were not particularly close but I don't think there was a teacher at Kent Hill who was as universally loved by the students as he was. Doing the math, he was about 27 years when I entered the school and was seen as cool by all of the students. I was just from Africa and thought that Warren Beatty must have been his brother because they look alike and their last names sounded similar. I remember him playing his guitar in assembly , singing Neil Young's 'after the gold rush' and 'sugar mountain' to rapturous applaud from the student body. I graduated in 1981 and still have a mental picture of him in his late 20's. After reading his obituary, it is obvious he went to accomplish a lot of things after this time frame and am happy to see he lived such a rewarding life. A lot of students affectionately called him Beeds but the African in me could not allow me to call him this, even after we became friends on face book numerous years later. He was a special man who impacted a lot of students with his positivity. He will be missed and in the final analysis, this will be one of his legacies .

Dr. Beedy will be greatly missed. He was an inspiration and a mentor for me. My son, Liam, loved him and especially his guitar! Although, he was only head of school at Bruno for a year, I felt like I had known him a lifetime, a true Renaissance Man. I am forever grateful for his kind words and advice.
