Jennifer Atkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2024.
Jennifer Lee Atkins (McGahan), a beloved wife, mother, daughter, aunt, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on October 27, 2024, at the age of 75. Jennifer's life was a testament to her love of family, friendship, and faith. A proud graduate of Osborne High School, she attended Valdosta State University and was admired for her warm heart and community spirit. Known for her joyful demeanor, she cultivated deep relationships and took delight in hosting gatherings, especially during the holidays. Her faith in Jesus Christ was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her through both joys and challenges. As a lifelong animal lover, Jennifer cherished her dogs Sydney, Beau, Abbie, Jordan, Molly, and Mia, and in her final years was comforted by her beloved Max and Cookie.

Born in 1949 in Somerset, Kentucky, Jennifer is preceded in death by her husband William "Bill" Austin Atkins Sr., father Richard Walter McGahan, sister Patricia Jane Warren, and first husband John Patrick Yarbrough. She is survived by her daughter Stacy Ann Yarbrough; son John Justin Yarbrough (Elizabeth); mother Shirley Lee McGahan; stepchildren Paige Atkins Post (Dan) and William "Chip" Austin Atkins Jr. (Ruth Ann); and grandchildren Claire Isla Yarbrough, Olivia, Tanner, and Everett Hawkins, Ari, Ryder, and Tanner Post, and William and Tate Atkins. Jennifer cherished and delighted in her role as "Mimi" to them all.

After a courageous journey with dementia, she passed peacefully in her daughter's home. Details for a celebration of her life will be announced by her family. Jennifer's legacy of warmth, friendship, and faith will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing her.

I only knew Jennifer in recent years when our neighborhood ladies would go out to lunch. She enjoyed coming with us to the various restaurants. Her stories centered around meeting Bill, visiting her mother, and Max and Cookie. Her big bag held a lot of treasures and memories for her including her sock monkey. She was a delight to know, and she will be greatly missed.

Jennifer was a light in the darkness! She had a smile that would change the atmosphere. She lived rich with Jesus and brought Him with her everywhere she went. I had the honor of working with her at Brown Elementary school. I am so blessed to have worked with her. I will miss her but her memories are forever until I see her again in heaven.

Jennifer was an individual that was always in good spirits and enjoyed herself regardless of where she was. I don´t believe she ever met a stranger and would give you the coat off her back if she thought you needed it. She was a beautiful lady and will be truly missed.

Jennifer and I met at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta when we were in our 20's
From there we became friends and "soul sisters". We went on womens retreats together. I always enjoyed her cookie swaps at Christmas, and I loved the many times we spent girl weekends at her different mountian homes that she owned over the years. She was a great hostess, and a special friend.
My life is a little emptier without her.

My first plane ride ever was to go to Atlanta to see my beloved cousin Jennifer. Although I haven´t been able to see her for years, I´ll always have those wonderful memories with her and her family.
RIP Jennifer , I´ll always love you.
