Jermaine Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2023.
Jermaine K. Mitchell, affectionately known by many as "Maine", "Big Maine", "Tank", and "Tank Daddy" passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 13, 2023 from a heart attack in his home. At the time, he was making his wife Olivia's favorite meal.

Born on September 7, 1989, in Brooklyn, NY, Jermaine was the epitome of kindness, compassion, and integrity. His laughter was infectious, his work ethic unparalleled, and his loyalty unwavering. Jermaine's love story with Olivia, whom he endearingly referred to as "my lovely bride", spanned seven beautiful years, with the last two as a happily married couple. Their bond was recently strengthened even further through the birth of their baby daughter, Maya.

As a former defensive line player, he proudly showcased his dedication and passion on the field. Jermaine's football career was both impressive and extensive. He began at Xaverian High School as a defensive tackle, helping the school capture their first and only CHSFL AA City Championship in 2006. He then went on to become a 4-year starter at Allegheny College from 2007-2010, where he majored in economics and minored in math graduating in 2011. During his senior year, he earned Second Team All-NCAC honors. His subsequent coaching journey took him to Marietta College, the University of Charleston, Gannon University, and eventually back to Allegheny. Most recently, in 2022, he served as the Linebackers and Special Teams Coordinator at North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Jermaine's sharpness on the field was matched only by his extraordinary gift of making everyone he met feel like family. His genuine interest in people's lives was evident in the way he always remembered the little details about them. This innate ability to connect and his unwavering steadiness (plus that laugh) will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

His heart might have taken him away from us too soon, but that same heart was also his superpower. Jermaine always found a way to show people he loved them exactly when they needed it.

Jermaine's laughter and connections knew no bounds, as he welcomed all into his extended family. In addition to his beloved wife Olivia and their newborn Maya, Jermaine is survived by his parents, Rudolph and Patricia Mitchell; siblings Jason, and his wife, Kehnesha, Rudolph Mitchell, Jr., nieces Kaci and Kamryn Mitchell, and a large circle of in-laws including Pamela Dailey, Jeff Lang and Sandy Wycoff Lang, Maxwell, Nicole, Quinn, and Nolan Lang, Veronica Lang and Travis Pratt, Isabel Lang, and Sara and Jeff Handler.

The commemoration of Jermaine's life will be held in services that reflect the lasting impact he made. The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023, with a viewing from 4-6 p.m. and service from 6-8 p.m. at Caribe Funeral Home located at 1922 Utica Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11234. A repass will follow at Caribe Hall, 1963 Utica Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11234. A final viewing will be held on August 26, 2023, from 10-11 a.m. at Caribe Funeral Home, followed by a funeral procession to Cypress Hill Cemetery at 833 Jamaica Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11208. As we gather, let us celebrate Jermaine's legacy by fostering connections and spreading kindness, perpetuating the spirit that defined Jermaine's journey.

A virtual service option will be available.

I have so many memories of Jermaine, but I will share this... we recently moved to NC a couple months ago and we were excited to be within driving distance of Olivia and Jermaine again... to welcome us to the South, Jermaine sent us bug spray. That was Jermaine. He sent us bug spray with a thoughtful note telling us to beware of the mosquitos down south. I reached out to thank him and we talked and I´m so glad we did, that was our last convo. I´ll never think of bug spray without thinking of Jermaine and his compassionate, thoughtful soul. He had the purest, kindest heart and I miss him dearly.

I never had the privilege of meeting Jermaine, but my husband played football with him at Allegheny College. My husband recently had some health issues, and we received the most beautiful letter of encouragement. I could hear the warmth and encouragement in Jermaine's words. It meant so much to both of us. Praying for peace and strength for Jermaine and his family.

Jermaine may be the most ebullient person I have ever met. He had such a zestful personality that the mood of social situation would immediately change upon his arrival. In remembering him, I am not sure I can recall a disparaging remark he ever made about anyone. He will be deeply missed.

He was truly a kind soul, always willing to help ease any anxieties of those he encountered. Most of my memories of Jermaine was him gushing over Olivia. He was an incredibly lovely and loving man, everyone would benefit from trying to be a bit more like Jermaine each day.
Sending so much love to his darling family.

"You need to smile more", "Josh did you smile today". My man Coach Mitchell would always come up to me and say these or things similar to them. Reminding me that no matter how difficult life gets, you have to find a way to smile and cherish the good days and the bad ones. So, even though this hurts I´m going to smile and remember all the laughs and lesson he taught me. Fly high and watch over us Coach.

My heart and prayers goes out to all
