Jerry David Hayes The Rev. Jerry David Hayes, 68, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013, at his home. He was a loving husband, father and had a deep love of God and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel Hayes and Nola Strickland; a brother, Bob Hayes; and an infant brother. Jerry was owner and operator of the Mine Resources, Inc. since 1982, a successful well known small business owner and respected in the coal industry. He was the pastor of the Flatwoods Freewill Baptist Church; a 1964 graduate of Coeburn High School. He was an avid golfer; a Duke University Basketball Fan and a University of Tennessee Football Fan and he served in the National Guard. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Dolores Lawson Hayes; a daughter, Kimberly Hayes of Hazard, Ky.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sherry and Charles Reece and Janie and Eddie Dockery all of Coeburn, Va.; two nephews, Bobby Hayes Jr. and Scottie Reece; three nieces, Tracy Pearce, Heather Lane and Laura Lee Richardson; and an aunt, Flora Belle Robinette of Norton, Va. Jerry will be greatly missed by his church; especially his family and all that knew him. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 2, 2013, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Sturgill Funeral Home, 310 6th Street NW, Coeburn, Va. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel Coeburn with Brother Les Ritchie and Rodney Deel officiating. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Greenwood Acres Cemetery Coeburn. The family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Please visit www.sturgillfuneral.com to send condolences to the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Flatwoods Freewill Baptist Church, c/o Judy Taylor, 13064 Flatwoods Road, Coeburn, VA 24230.
