Jerry Trussler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 28, 2022.
Jared "Jerry" Trussler was born on August 21st, 1938 to Fern and Arthur Trussler in Paso Robles, California and passed away peacefully at his home in Kerikeri, New Zealand on June 24th, 2022. He grew up in San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara Counties and graduated from San Luis Obispo High School with the class of 1956.

In 1957, Jerry went to Alaska to work on a commercial fishing boat in the Bering Sea, which he described as the most pivotal point in his career, and he continued to return to Alaska as a commercial fisherman for over 30 years. Jerry also became a commercial abalone diver and obtained his pilot instructor's license.

In 1965, Jerry started a welding company focused on building steel commercial fishing vessels, but later moved on to manufacturing steel water tanks up to 10 million gallons in size for municipalities all over California. In 1977, Jerry renamed his business Trusco Tank Inc. and the company grew to employ over 250 employees in San Luis Obispo, Fresno, and Bakersfield.

In the early 80s, Jerry was contracted to build underground fuel storage tanks for Anderson Air Force Base in Guam, and in 1985, he was named California's Small Business Person of the Year by the US Small Business Administration. The 90s saw him go on to build some of the first double containment underground fuel storage tanks for service stations in California and patent a number of underground storage systems.

Jerry moved his family to New Zealand in 1997 in search of a new adventure and established Sweetwater Orchards in Awanui; it was the largest avocado orchard in New Zealand at the time and became Jerry's pride and joy. He had a kentia palm tree nursery in Coopers Beach for over two decades and even opened a donut shop in Kerikeri in 2016. He was an avid diver and enjoyed many a day underwater searching for crayfish in the Bay of Islands. Larger than life, Jerry often humorously referred to himself as "J.T. the Good Guy", a nickname embraced by those close to him.

Jerry is survived by his daughters Lori Emmington, Leslie Hill, and April Burton; grandchildren Christopher, Hayden, Jenni, BreeAna, Kaileb, Jacob, Cade, and Jon; great-grandchildren Delilah and Zoey; and friend, Bill Wiessing. He was greeted at the eternal gates by parents Art and Fern, brother Bill and sister-in-law Lano, and children Christopher and Raina. Jerry will be greatly missed by his friends and family in both New Zealand and the United States.

I can´t believe hearing this. Im sitting in a winery in Woodinville Wash. with my wife Heidi and the waitress is from New Zealand. I mentioned to her my friend is an avocado farmer in New Zealand, I looked Jerry up and see this post.
I´m very sad to hear he passed away.
Jerry was my father´s good friend from the good old days fishing in Bristol Bay.
I stared fishing when I was 9 years old and have many great memories of Jerry through out the years. I was so thankful that Jerry sold me his last fishing boat called Arnela.
I renamed it Heidi of Norway. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family. I´m so grateful for knowing him.

I worked for Jerry building steel fishing boats in San Luis Obispo part time while attending Cal Poly. Jerry was an inspiration to me. He taught me a lot about steel fabrication and welding. I was impressed with his manufacturing processes for steel boats which were unique in the industry at that time. I will always remember those experiences with fond memories.

Wow its been a year. I think of you often and greatly miss our discussions on your next new business adventure. Every time the Dos Equis commercial comes on and they talk about the most interesting man in the world I think of you as you have been a great inspiration to me. Jim has another Alaska fishing trip set up for August and it won't be the same without you. I have attached a few pics from our AK trip, my visit to NZ and your trip to AZ. Hope the fishing is good where your at and save a few big ones for me.

I first met Jerry on an Alaskan fishing trip many years ago. We instantly became friends and I loved to hear all his personal achievement stories. He was such a thoughtful and kind man with a great sense of humor. I am going to miss his phone calls to tell me about his latest adventures.

Jerry impacted the world in so many beautiful ways. His memory will forever live on in our hearts.

Heartfelt thoughts go out to the family during this difficult time.

I'm looking up and asking Jerry to get the boat ready so when I get there we both can get back in the water to do some crayfish/ lobster diving. We both have been out of the water for way to long. Jerry was our friend and I will always think of him as J.T. The Good Guy! He was the nicest guy you could meet. He was generous with everything he owned and always invited his friends to stay with him in N.Z. If you did not meet Jerry, you missed out on someone you would never forget. We share all his family sorrow and hope that everyone knows that he will be missed by many. Our love to all his family.
