Jerry Zucker Obituary

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Jerry Zucker, a self-made billionaire who turned a small holding company into an empire that would eventually buy one of Canada's most-storied companies, has died. He was 58.

Zucker, chief executive officer of the Hudson's Bay Company, died of cancer Saturday at his Charleston home, according to the company.

Zucker was a scientist and inventor before becoming a global businessman. In 1983, he founded The InterTech Group, a conglomerate that makes fabrics and plastics for items as simple as tarps and as complex as insulation used in the minus 200 degree world of cryogenics. The company said his wife, Anita, will take over as chairwoman and chief executive officer, while his son Jonathan has been named president.

In 2006, Jerry Zucker acquired Hudson's Bay Company, created as a fur-trading venture under a royal charter in 1670. Anita Zucker will take over as governor, becoming the first woman chief executive in the retailer's 338-year history.

''Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Zucker family in their time of mourning. The best tribute we can give to Jerry is to continue his vision for the long-term success of HBC,'' said Rob Johnston, deputy governor of the company.

The acquisition of Hudson's Bay Company moved Zucker onto Forbes magazine's list of billionaires, with a net worth of $1.2 billion in the 2008 list.

Zucker was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1949 and immigrated to Charleston with his parents and brother three years later. He majored in chemistry, mathematics and physics at the University of Florida and received a master's degree in electrical engineering from Florida State University.

Zucker had more than 350 inventions and patents. His first major invention came in high school. The technology that went into his Revolutionary Phase Factor for Colinear Electromagnetic Waves would later be used in the first lunar landing module.

Zucker also made pacemakers and surgical tools and discovered a process so manufacturers could perforate the outside end of a roll of toilet paper instead of having to glue it.

Dear Anita and Family,

My most heartfelt condolences go out to you and the family during this time of sorrow and remembrance. For over a decade I’ve had the privilege to witness and learn from a humble man who balanced great ambition with great compassion. His life work accomplished both. Jerry inspired so many to dream larger, take chances and make good things happen. Many in business knew Jerry for his incredible intellect and breadth of knowledge, but it was his ordinary man style that impressed me so much. Jerry’s business achievements are legendary, yet he never sought the trappings of such success and preferred to personally set examples for others to follow. Jerry’s great hope was that personal responsibility would return as a code of conduct and that we must be prepared to be part of the solution. Jerry gave us countless acts of kindness, simple examples of civil service and great challenges to motivate our minds. Jerry’s influence will never fade and the road ahead is dedicated to his vision.

I regret that I did not have an opportunity to get to know Jerry as well as I would have liked, but I want you to know what a profound impression he made on me. The first time I met him was during his initial visit to Pbi. I took Jerry on his plant tour - which lasted 2 and 1/2 hours! - and it was an amazing experience. I could tell from that initial time I spent with him that this was a person unlike any I had ever met before. His knowledge, experience, enthusiasm, and expectations were quite frankly overwhelming to me. On subsequent visits with Jerry, whether at the plant or in the Charleston offices, I continued to be impressed by this great man. I never felt like we were doing enough to satisfy him, but I know he was trying to inspire us to achieve greater things. Working for Jerry and the InterTech Group for the past three years has been the most rewarding period of my career; I am proud to be part of the InterTech family. As we mourn his loss, we will continue to do our best to honor his memory by fulfilling the vision he had for Pbi.

Dear Mrs. Zucker and Family,
I was deeply shocked the Monday morning when I came to work and heard of Mr. Zucker's passing away. He visited the Rock Hill plant a couple of times, and I had the privilege to speak with him and hear him address our employees. The things he said made such an impression on me - things about work ethic, his background, some of his inventions and his expectations - that I still remember much of what he said. I shared many points of his speech that day with my family and was even sharing with a newer employee the week before he passed away. It was easy to see that he was on a whole different plane than most people. I also appreciate the fact that he was so personal. That first year after he acquired our business, he wrote a personal note on my bonus pay stub. I was so moved that he would take the time to do that, that I filed that stub away amongst my treasured keepsakes. After reading and hearing so many testimonies about Mr. Zucker, it is evident that he touched countless lives and left the world a better place than he found it. I hope you find solace in the fact that so many will miss him. My prayers are with you.

To the Zucker Family,

There are no words that can express the loss that you have endured with the passing of Mr. Z. Over the years I had thought I had known the businessman, inventor, and humanitarian that he was, only to find after his passing that he was much more than anyone could have ever known. His legacy is the life he led and the example anyone should be proud to follow. He will be sorely missed in this world. My thoughts and prayers go to you all.

To the Zucker Family:

I have truly enjoyed the work Jerry provided for me at The Rug Barn, White Knight, Teftec, and Z-man Fishing products. I have many memories all which are good and I know at this time of grief there is little that can be said to bring relief. But Jerry leaves behind an example for all of us to remember and to follow and he shall remain in our hearts and lives. May God richly bless you for sharing with us in the life of such a great person.

Anita,
I offer you my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your lifelong partner. It goes without saying, that Jerry was an incredible businessman, but what impressed me the most, though, was his character. Men of faith, conviction, and heart are more rare than we would like to admit, and the world needs more of them.
It wasn’t, however, until I visited Jerry after his father’s passing, that I really got to meet the man – not just the boss. I was amazed at the things we had in common, especially with our fathers. That day I met a friend with an enormous heart and boundless wisdom. He will be missed.
I am proud to have known Jerry and worked for him, and will always remember and be grateful for the contributions he made to my personal growth.

I was very sorry to hear of the death of Jerry Zucker, though I never had the privilege of meeting him. I met Anita several times in connection with Trident United Way when we were living in Charleston. I know no family so unsparingly generous. One time on a flight out of Charleston, I sat next to a businessman who had just finished a long negotiation with Mr. Zucker. He told me how impressed he was with Jerry's razor-sharp mind, his transparency and underlying humilty. Charleston is so much richer because of Jerry and Anita Zucker. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

We were Arlington neighborhood kids in Jacksonville, Florida with the Zucker Family. My brother went to Terry Parker with Jerry and I went to school with Rochelle. It has been many years ago. We all have lost touch. It has been enlightening to read the wonderful tales that have been told about Jerry Zucker. It is pleasing to see that he did so well for his community and his family. What a lasting legacy he leaves. Please accept our deepest sympathies. I represent the Kowitz Family: Arthur, Rochelle, Cynthia and Diane, children of Joe and Sylvia Kowitz, both deceased.

Dear Mrs. Zucker and Family,
I just read all of the notices in the guest book and feel like I knew Jerry very well though I never met or spoke to him. Obviously he touched more lives, and in such a positive, compassionate manner, in his far too short life, than most others. They say that leaving a "good name" is the nicest legacy. Jerry must have been a very special person and he will be, not only be missed by his family, but it seems by everyone with whom he came in contact with in his life. May his memory be a blessing.
May G-d comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

April 16, 2008

To the Zucker family: The Lipp family is deeply saddened with the news of Jerry's untimely passing. We spent many enjoyable Seders at the Zucker home in Jacksonville. Leon and Zipora were my favorite Hebrew teachers. Jerry taught me to play guitar and was a good friend even though he was a few years older. I remember when he made a laser out of a ruby rod and once he took me to an Army surplus yard and tinkered with some radio equipment that he actually got to work. I knew that Jerry would be a great success but he exceeded anyone's expectations. I hadn't seen Jerry since my high school reunion 20 years ago but I remember him well. Was hoping to see him at the next one. We lost a great man but it looks like his legacy will live on. It was a privelege to have known him. Regards to Anita, Jack, Rochelle, and Zipora from Eileen, George, and Frances, we lost Moe last year.

April 15, 2008

I'll never forget the first time I had the honor of meeting Jerry. He said to me..."Melek, if you don't know what you want then how can I help you? Come back to see me when you know." I had first gone to see Jerry in 1993 to ask for a donation for a children's project I was working on in war-torn Bosnia but I left his office with something so much more valuable than money. What he gave me that day changed my life, helping me to dig deep inside myself and find a way to put into words my vision for the world...eventually, I did go back to see Jerry and with his, Anita's and his children's support went on to carry out a number of projects to help children caught in the cross-fire of war. I can say, as a first hand witness, the extent to which his and his family's generosity and compassion saved lives and reduced the suffering of many children and because of the wisdom, generosity and humanity he shared with me at our first meeting, I have been able to live my own life to its fullest. To Anita, Jonathan, Laura, Andrea, Nicolas, Jeffrey, Mrs. Zipora Zucker, Jacob, Rochelle, Stella and Jeremy, my heartfelt condolences to each of you. Your husband, father, son, grandfather was a very special man and I know his spirit lives on in the many lives he helped save and through my own work today, to promote peace in the Middle East.

The Zucker Family-What impressed me most is how he lived his life. He let his work speak for it self. He avoided the limelight. He did not need all the attention and public praise, instead he chose a private life. Although not the norm to others, this was his way and I highly respect him and admire him.

Mr. Zucker, you're missed and will never be forgotten by the staff of Designated Drivers Against Drunk Drivers. Thanks for your time, efforts and monetary contributions to our organization/company. Thank you for all you did for your hometown. Our lives were better because of it. We will never forget it. Heaven knows you will be sorely missed.

Our store was shocked and very saddened to hear of Mr. Zs death. I read in a paper today that he had not been with HBC long enough to leave a legacy. Believe me did. I had the privalege of meeting him twice over the last 2 years and he truely inspired me to be at my best at all times and open up my mind to all possibilites. He put the human touch back in our company with a humility and level of respect missing in most big business. We feel like we have lost a family member.
Please accept our heart felt condolances on your great loss.

Anita and Family, Angie and I were so very shocked and saddened to learn of Jerry's passing as we understand many others were also. He had so many accomplishments and touched many lives, surely he will be deeply missed. Your family should be very greatful for all of the love and respect that Jerry so rightfully earned and he will be missed by all.
