Jessie Ivy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2019.
Our beloved grandmother, Jessie Ivy, passed away February 8, 2019. She blessed us with a life of love, laughter and sweet memories.

Ms. Jessie, as she was affectionately called, was born to the late Jim and Josephine Tomlin Russell on November 5, 1913 in Whitehouse. She was born in a home that was located on the same property as her current home. She was the 6th of 9 children. She fondly shared many memories of growing up on the farm. She attended Whitehouse schools and graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1932.

On April 27, 1935 Jessie married Edgar Ivy. They shared 58 years together until his death in 1993. To this union four children were born. Except for short stints in the Walnut Grove community and Tyler, Edgar and Jessie raised their family in Whitehouse. Her children were fortunate to be raised near cousins that lived just over the hill. It's been said neither Jessie nor her sister, Lillian, ever knew exactly which kids would end up at the other's supper table! Sadly, Russell, Wanda, Jerry and Ronnie preceded her in death. She also lost her granddaughter, Dwana Chaney. Losing her husband, all of children and a grandchild left a hole in her heart.

Mam-Maw, as we called her, was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She spent her entire life loving and taking care of others. There was always room at her table for anyone that cared to join. All the grandkids would agree that the first thing one did when visiting her was go straight to the refrigerator and look for leftovers. Her fried chicken and fresh cobblers were a family favorite. Many times she would send us out to pick blackberries for a cobbler and somehow they would be gone by the time we got back to the house. She would laugh and send us back out to pick more. She was kind hearted, generous and a delight to be around. She loved nothing more than a good party or a game of 42 with friends at church. In her younger years she enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening.

On August 18, 1947 Mam-Maw joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She worshipped there the rest of her life. She loved her church family and they loved her. Her greatest joy came from serving God and her family. However, she adored her grandchildren and treasured her time with them.

She is survived by Russ Ivy, Nicole & Monty Smith and Kyle Ivy all of Whitehouse, Rhonda & Blake Bowden of Carrollton, Shannon & Bryan O'Neal of Winona, Kevin & Karen Ivy of Troup, Trey & Sandy Thornton of Chapel Hill and Ron & Lisa Ivy of Whitehouse, 19 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Rita Smith, Janina Tindall and Sissy Fusco, nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly.

Services are entrusted to Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 5-6:30 at the funeral home. We will celebrate her life on Monday, February 11, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with her dear friend and pastor, Bro. Benny Portwood, officiating.

I am astounded by her audacious life journey, unwavering strength, guile, will and seemingly unscathed survival through so many ivy boys! Its hard for me to fathom what kind of an amazing woman she had to have been all the way down to her core to live 105 good years when I often feel like just the 40 Ive been given will surely do me in. Ive had the honor of meeting several members of her extended family and I have yet to meet an Ivy I do not adore. Symbolically I see her as the Ivy family adhesive and I just wish I wouldve gotten her recipe for glue!

I first met this wonderful lady, Ms. Jessie, when she came to work in the cafeteria at Trane. Such a tiny little lady to have made such a big and lasting impression on all who knew her. She had a quick friendly smile for everyone she met and was simply a joy to be around. Whether she was scooping up oatmeal or dishing out the lunch en'tree, she put her special touch to it for each one in line. Years had gone by when I came in contact with her again through playing "Forty-Two" at Mt. Carmel. Then, in her nineties, I thought I had to "cut her a little slack" when playing. Didn't take me long to see she was remarkably sharp and a little on the "sly - tricky" side (just in game-playing). So needless to say, I found very quickly that I didn't need to treat her with kid gloves when it came to playing forty-two! In fact, she was hard to beat and I loved being her partner! Most of all, I saw a Christian lady who had suffered much pain and loss, but who had endured gracefully because of her love for, and trust in the Lord. What an inspiration she was to me and I will always remember our little talks and her beautiful winning smile. See you in Heaven, my sweet friend.

Jerry Joyce Spier Hill and Maw Maws daughter, Wanda, were best friends and pretty close neighbors. Tooter loved Mrs Ivy and told us many stories of growing up. They had to get the cows in before they could go to to show in Troup. She spent a lot of time at their home. Later in life, Stuart, Tooters son, moved from Garland, just down the road from the Ivys. We became good friends with Dwana Lynn and Don Chaney. The friendships came full circle. We look forward to our reunion with Jesus and all the loved ones gone before us. Prayers for her family, because she will be greatly missed.

Ms Jessie was the perfect example of a true Christian. It showed in many ways through all she did and said. Few of us will be able to touch as many people in so many different ways. Always in a Christian, loving, understanding, and carrying touch. She blessed everyone she came in contact with. Having had the chance to be around Ms. Jessie has been a true Blessing. She has a place in so many people's hearts. She will be missed and remembered till we see her precious smile greeting us as we ourselves enter Heaven. Thoughts and prayers to all her family. We all loved her.

When I first met Ms Jessie I told her I only knew one of my grandparents for a little while. She said Ill be your granny....just call me Mam-Maw. Ever since that day I did just that.
I always told her that I wanted to be just like her when I grew up (haha)....full of life and laughter.
There can never be anyone to take her place....she was one of a kind and the world is less because she has gone to Heaven.
Mam-Mae, I love you and will miss you always.

My wish is that I would leave such a legacy that this dear sweet lady has left. She was always such a joy to be around, and with a smile on her face always. I know her family must be standing at the gates with arms outstretched saying "Welcome home mama". My prayers for the loved ones she has left behind. May God give you all a peace over her passing.

Growing up next door to Nicole Ivy's family, meant I learned to love Mam-Maw Ivy. The world was always more wonderful in her presence. As much as she LOVED her family, she loved her Jesus more. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that all heaven is rejoicing to have her home. She would want you to be sure to meet her there.
