Jesus Rebollo Obituary
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Disgraced former Mexican drug czar Gen. Jesus Gutierrez Rebollo has died from complications from prostate cancer while serving a 40-year sentence for protecting a drug cartel. He was 79.
Lawyer Javier Marban Corral says Gutierrez Rebollo died Thursday in a Mexico City military hospital where he had been hospitalized for more than two years.
Marban said Gutierrez Rebollo had just been notified that he could serve his remaining sentence under house arrest because of his health and old age.
He was arrested in 1997 when he was head of Mexico's anti-drug agency and convicted for protecting Juarez cartel leader Amado Carrillo Fuentes. The fallen general inspired the character of the Mexican drug czar in Steven Soderbergh's 2000 film "Traffic."
