Jewel Knapp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 24 to Sep. 25, 2002.

KNAPP
JEWEL McNEIL BURKE
Died peacefully, at home, on Sunday, September 22, 2002; loving wife of Richard for over 50 years; proud of her Virginia birthplace, but loved Pennsylvania. Mother and mother in-law of Bradford Knapp and Marjorie and Pam, Lisa Knapp Lorenzi and Jim, Kenneth Knapp and Alysia, Laura Knapp Cheryba and Tom; grandmother of Joe, Zack, Lauren, Casey, Alexis, Elizabeth, Melanie, Roslyn, Sam, Adam, Rio and Anna; sister of Imogene, Ralph, Bruce, Herbert and preceded in death by Buford, Clyde and Jay. Jewel was a resident of the Township of Pine for over 32 years. 15 years ago she and Richard developed their property known as "Charter Oak", named after a magnificent 250 year old white oak tree that drew them to the property. They then built what Jewel referred to as her dream home, designed to accommodate her large family and to entertain friends. Perhaps Jewel's proudest accomplishment, besides her family, was the part she played in helping her daughter, Laura, form and develop the Laura Lynn School of Dance in Gibsonia, one of the largest dance schools in the North Hills. Through the years she continued to play a major part in the development and the success of the school through her involvement and advice in all aspects in running the studio. "Mrs. Knapp" was known by most parents and students for her insight into dance and her warmth and consideration in dealing with everyone. At "Charter Oak" Jewel loved gardening and landscaping, allowing she and Richard to turn the nearly ten acres into a nature preserve with a lake and all manner of plants, shrubs and trees. Although she began a career in nursing, she put it aside while raising her family. They meant everything to her and it was reflected by the love and devotion her children and grandchildren had for their mother and "Granny". Visitation with the family on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at SIMONS FUNERAL HOME, INC. 7720 Perry Hwy.. Services and interment private. Family suggest contributions to Forbes Hospice, 6655 Frankstown Ave., Pgh, PA 15206 or The Make-A-Wish Foundation of W. PA, 555 Grant St., Suite 425, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. www.simonsfuneralhomeinc.com

You were always waiting in the shadows for us as a strength and an encouragement. To you our performances were always beautiful. Even if we didn't think so, your warm smile reassured us that we were. You will always be an encouragement to us and we will always remember your smiling face and your faith in us with every dance that comes our way.
