My husband and I had the great pleasure of meeting Jim Booth when we were living in Charleston in 2018. We went to the Jim Booth Gallery on James Island not far from where we lived and it was my birthday and my husband wanted to get me a Jim Booth painting. I selected "The Storm." Jim was there that day and signed my painting and personalized it. This was very special for me. Before we moved the gallery was in the process of closing because he was losing his sight. We learned Jim was going to paint one more painting as he was commissioned by the church we attended, St. James Anglican Church. This may very well have been his last painting. After we moved, my husband learned the painting had been released and he ordered the painting and gave it to me on Valentine's Day 2020. I am so glad to have both of my paintings and so blessed that we met Mr. Booth and my first painting was signed by him. He was definitely a brilliant artist and sounds like he was a great person to know.

I have several paintings of Jim Booth's in my home, but my husband and I stopped by the gallery in James Island to purchase another picture and this man starts signing my picture!! I'm thinking what are you signing my picture for? Turns out it was Jim Booth himself!! I had never met him didn't know what he looked like!! I was totally shaken also embarrassed that I didn't know him! I apologized and told him what a fan I was and I wish I could buy all his paintings!! He was touched !! It was very meaningful!! I was just surfing the net to see what the value of the so many prints we have on the walls. Jim would send us for insurance purposes and had not received anything in a while. I was shocked to read of his passing, such a great talent and always a joy to talk to him in his gallery. He dedicated several of the prints we purchased as gifts to our sons. They moved from the low country and his prints reminded them of home. As a Vietnam veteran one to another rest in peace my brother in arms.

I met Jim in 1995 when I moved to Charleston and visited his gallery. Jim and I visited after I bought several works. He was full of life and stories. I moved to North Augusta but came back to visit not knowing his past in North Augusta so we talked about his childhood for a long time. His paintings capture the beauty of the South and the timelessness of its landscapes. He was a kind and wonderful soul. God Bless the family as he will be missed.

Didn't have the good fortune to meet Mr. Booth, but always loved his art and have several prints. I wouldn't take anything for them. He leaves so much beauty behind for many to remember him by. He made his mark on this world. Prayers for all his family and friends.

Just Heard of Jim Booth´s passing. We lived in Charleston from 1972 to 1976 on Beauregard Street, James Island. One of our neighbors knew his mother and told us about his paintings. We all bought an original before he was famous LOL We have since purchased a few others and still have them hanging in our home. We love his marsh scenes and Rainbow Row. He will be missed by family and friends but will live on through his wonderful artwork! God bless.

I ABSOLUTELY loved this man. Growing up, I would save my allowance and slowly collect paintings one by one. He would take time to walk with me through the gallery and tell me stories about his paintings and how he came up with ideas to paint them.
As I grew older and married, Jim was still my hero. My husband and I along with our family moved to Cincy but every time I would come home, I would visit the gallery.
Jim would mail me one small painting every year and write "Merry Christmas" with my name and the year on it in his infamous gold pen. The last one he sent was of the lighthouse....he said it was his favorite and meant the most to him.
Before the gallery closed, we took a pic in front of one of his first paintings, and talked about how he was going to "relax" now that he was retired, but still working on painting the dogs. Ha! What a great sense of humor.
This man has left a permanent mark on my heart, and his many paintings in our home will always be a lasting memory of him, his work, and his amazing passion for art and his city.
May the good Lord continue to bless you and your family.

What a humble man Jim was. I fell in love with his art work when it was displayed by Ambassador Art Gallery over 40 years ago. What detail! It has been my pleasure to visit his James Island studio many, many times and to have conversations with him. His art brought pleasure to thousands of people.

Very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. The Heinsohn's lived around the corner from the Booth's on Folly and I spent many nights babysitting the girls when they were young. I marveled at Jim's downstairs artist studio and the works he was starting and the beauty he was capturing. He and Virginia were so much fun to know. And his laugh just lit up a room and was so very unique to him! So very sorry for your loss! Much love, Dr. Kathy Heinsohn

I'm so sorry to hear that Jim has passed. I've collected his art for many years and no one will ever compare to his talent. I remember walking into his gallery one day and he had just hung a painting he had finished and I immediately said that I wanted it! Jim said, Mary at least let me hang it for awhile. I paid for it and let him keep it for a little while but I was determined to get it. My grandson went in with me as a little boy and as we walked around, he would say, I like this one Granny and I would say, I have it and you can have it. After about the 10th one, I looked up and saw a man standing with his mouth open staring at us and I just said, I have an automatic number and I buy them all. This grandson is a senior in college now and said yesterday that his home will be filled with Jim Booth art. He loves his work too! I have many of his signed and numbered prints and many more signed and numbered Artist Proofs, a couple of canvas prints, 1 pencil drawing that I gave to my daughter of 2 ducks, 1 published original of Daddy's Girl that I gave to my daughter when she finished college, 6 other original paintings that prints were not made from. I also have some old black and white prints from before he opened his own gallery. There will never be anyone that can come close to comparing to his talent. I always enjoyed talking with Jim, Virginia and Diane when I went into the gallery. I loved hearing Jim laugh! His work is all over the US, I've given my prints as gifts. Some of my gifts are in Idaho and Florida! My condolences to all of his family and friends.

Jim and I went to High School together and I got re acquainted with him when he and Virginia moved to thirteenth Street on Folly. Over the years, I had many opportunities to see him and talk to him about his paintings. I was privileged to get to know his family. For some reason, people thought that Jim and I looked alike. As I was getting t into politics on Folly and his art career was taking off, we would often share the experience of being mistakenly taken for the other. I would be in the grocery store when someone would come up to me saying how much they enjoyed my new painting and Jim would be approached by a disgruntled Folly citizen. We realized what was happening after talking one day. from that day on, I would simply graciously accept the compliments as if I were Jim but Jim couldn't resist tweaking people that were unhappy with me. We had many laughs over our encounters. Were it not for Jim's generosity and love for the Morris Island Light, I don't think that Save the Light could have ever managed to be able to buy it and donate it to the state. Jim created a special painting to finance the sale of the lighthouse and donated 400 prints, the sale of which made the purchase possible. Jim was a founding member and served on STL's advisory board until his passing. People like Jim Booth don't come along often enough. Obviously a hard working talented artist; he was so much more. It was an honor to have called him friend.

My momma went to JIHS with you and has almost every painting of the lowcountry you've done. When I married a Marine and left Charleston, I started my own collection of your paintings. When I am homesick for pluff mud and lowcountry sunsets, I can glance around in any room and find one of your paintings and I home again. May your family find peace and they walk this journey of mourning your death, but find joy in the lives you touched with your talent and charm. Semper Fi, sir!

We have a few of your paintings but stopped at the gallery on vacation and you were there. We bought a painting and you signed it for us. You weren´t happy with the signature so you used a razor blade to scrape it off a couple of times until it was perfect. It was the highlight of our visit.

All of our meetings up with Jim were at his gallery! I looked at him like a star, a really famous personality, so I only ho po ed to get a glance of him, if he were even in the gallery! When I saw him laughing and talking to clients and ringing up sales himself, I wasnt sure it was even him, but he stuck his hand out and introduced himself to us! I think I got all fan girlie and. blushed, lol! My husband knew of him, I guess, from around James Island, where he and I grew up. And from his mothers arduous collection of his prints! She was always running in, or sending one of us in to get a may or frame changed, or pick up new print she'd bought! After that first meeting, He treated us like old friends! Would even put his arm around my neck and hug me bc he knew I would blush....
And then that marvelous sound of his laughter. We"ll never forget the famous painter, and that down to earth, everyday Jim! May he rest in Jesus's arms. He will be sorely missed!
