Jimmy Dean Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jun. 18, 2010.
DEAN, Jimmy Ray, 81, died suddenly, but peacefully, at his home on the James River in Varina, Va., on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Jimmy was born into poverty August 10, 1928 in Olton, Texas, and was predeceased by his mother, Ruth Taylor Dean; father, George Otto Dean; and brother, Don Taylor Dean. As a young man, Jimmy joined our nation's Armed Forces and while stationed at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C., he began his musical career performing in nightclubs. Eventually, his talents took him to radio, television, writing songs and making records. After being discovered on local television, he starred in "The Jimmy Dean Show" on CBS and ABC-TV. In the 1960s and '70s, he went on to record many hit songs including "P.T. 109," "To A Sleeping Beauty," the perennial Mother's Day favorite, "IOU" and the self- penned, Grammy award-winning hit, "Big Bad John." Jimmy's career led him to regular performances in the casinos of Las Vegas and Reno, Nev., as well as the Hollywood Palace, The London Palladium and Carnegie Hall. As an actor, Jimmy portrayed Fess Parker's sidekick on "The Daniel Boone Show' in the 1960s and, in 1971, he starred with Sean Connery in the James Bond movie, "Diamonds Are Forever." Jimmy's investments included founding the most successful sausage company in America. In 1984, he sold Jimmy Dean Foods to the Sara Lee Corporation, but remained their company spokesperson for many years. Jimmy retired in 2001, but remained active in his community as a benefactor to local schools. He served on the board of Virginia's Game and Inland Fisheries, was a member of the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame, The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, and will be inducted posthumously, in October of this year, into The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 18 years, Donna Meade Dean of Varina; daughter, Connie Dean Taylor of Mahwah, N.J.; sons, Garry T. Dean and wife, Yoon, of Stratford, Conn., and Robert R. Dean and wife, Jennifer, of Old Tappan, N.J. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Caroline S. Taylor and Brianna Rae Dean. Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home on Laburnum Avenue on Sunday, June 20, from 12 noon until 8 p.m., and a celebration of Jimmy's life will be held on Monday, June 21, at 11 a.m. at Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will be private at the Dean home on Chaffin's Bluff.

Loved your music, loved your sausage, and you had the honest, open, caring, down-home personality like the folks I grew up around in West Virginia. I believe you must have grown up the same way in your home town. RIP, Jimmy Dean.

in the early 50s, my grandparent's lived on Chapman Ave in Roanoke VA. They took me across the street to meet a young man who lived there. They said his name was Jimmy Dean and that he was a good singer and was going to be famous. He took me for rides on his shoulders. I was about 3 years old and it was a story that my grandparent's told me. I remember what the house looked like and riding on someone's shoulders. Did Jimmy ever rent a room in a house on Chapman Ave at the time that he was just beginning to have his music played on the radio?

My Dad was always singing that Song Big Bad John when it came on the Radio when I was 10 he told me why.
My Dad met my Mom in early 40s they got engaged and went to meet her family. My Dad was 21 when his Dad passed away. My Moms name was Dorothy Dean. He shared the story of his Dad coming from Montenegro and 1st worked at a Mine in Bisbee, Arizona then later went to Miami to work in a mine. About 3 years later he went back to Montenegro and married my Grandmother. There was a collapse at the mine but he survived that. My Grandfather was 6’6 and weighed about 245. My Dad said the Song was partly based on my Grandfather!
My Mothers Father was Edward Powell Dean possibly related to Jimmys Father.
My Dad died in 1996 I wish I could have met Jimmy to make sure this is true. If nothing else it makes me think about my Grandfather who I never got to meet BIG JOHN!

I was watching reruns of Daniel Boone on T.V. today when there was Jimmy Dean in one of the supporting roles. I had some memories when I was a very small child of him. I was born in Washington, DC and my family moved to nearby Maryland when I was little. Our next door neighbor in our apartment building was Dub Howington, who had hired Jimmy Dean to play in his band. Even as a small child I knew they played in many local country establishments, including the Crossroads, I think the Dixie Pig and Wigwam. I remembered watching Mr. Dean on the local T.V. show (I think called Country Time). Mr. Howington sometimes appeared on it. My mom was born a country girl from Virginia; she loved their music. I enjoyed it too. I was surprised to see this Legacy book still online accepting postings. Just thought I'd share my memory. I really enjoyed his show, even when I was a little tyke. Loved Big Bad John. Think I recall seeing the muppets on his show. Good memories. Sorry he is no longer with us.

His voice brings back fond memories of my high school days when us kids got dressed next to our gas stove in the living room while watching the Jimmy Dean TV show. I will never forget him. Great show!

June 5, 2018

He probably was a good christen man but I can't figure out how a man got electricuted working on the Big Bad John and Jimmie Dean could not be severed papers and the sever was threatened. Within hours the boat was moved out of Fort La into international waters.
The mans widow lives today in proverty and the Jimmie Dean is praised. This is all in the courthouse in Dade County.

I went to see Jimmy Dean with my mother in the early 60s. I remember he had them turn all the lights out in Freedom Hall (Lou Ky.) and then asked the audience to hold up a lit match or lighter. Donna & Family,
I am so sorry for your loss! His legacy will live long past our lives in the hearts of millions who may have never gotten the opportunity to meet him. He was a good hugger & a kind man. I remember many times late in his life where he would visit the record store, Memory Lane Records/Record Finders, & glance through the records to see if anyone would notice who he was. Of coarse he would get plenty of attention as soon as he was noticed. He was a very sweet man & loved his fans. I only visited your home once with my husband, Fletcher Rick, as a guest of my step-father, Walt Smith, during the book release. Although we were not stars of any kind, Donna, you were the best hostess I have ever met! You & your friends welcomed us in & made us feel like part of the family! I want you to know that you are in our prayers always! We wish you the best in life!
Sincerely,
Lisa Rick

I'll never forget the time in 1990 when my 11 year old son and I flew into Dallas on our way back from Germany, and Mr. Dean was sitting slouched over with his infamous cowboy hat over his eyes, sleeping. I sat next to him. He woke up, we started talking. I asked him if he had any sausage on him, he chuckled and said, "honey, I wish you hadn't asked me that." Then it dawned on me how it sounded. My son was totally embarrassed. We had a good laugh over it. I'm so happy I got to meet him in person. Love his movies and him. May the Lord bless his soul and keep him. God bles Mr. Dean's family. He is sadly missed at my home. I'll always buy his Sausage. Love ya, Jimmy

I, too, remember watching The Jimmy Dean Show when I was little. He seemed like a genuine nice man. Years later, while in Myrtle Beach, SC, picking up my parents at the airport, I could've sworn "that man sure looks like Jimmy Dean". "That Man" stopped, stated he was indeed and shook my hand. God Bless you, Jimmy. There's a mighty fine singer with the angels now. My condolences to the Dean family.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Dean family. Jimmy Dean was one of a kind and will be missed by all who followed his career(s). In the late 1950' or early 60's Jimmy and Jerry Vale owned property in Loudoun County, Virginia and, as a teenager, I had the opportunity to meet them while making hay on their land. I was impressed with Jimmy's friendly nature and down-to-earth way of dealing with us. I had listened to some of his early shows from Uline Arena in DC, and after actually meeting him I was a lifetime fan.
