Jo-Anne Dyment Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 26 to Nov. 27, 2006.
DYMENT _ Jo-Anne (nee Yates) 1948 - 2006 Jo-Anne Dyment, beloved wife of Alan Dyment of Calgary, died on Friday, November 24, 2006 after a long illness, with her loving family by her side at the age of 58 years. Jo-Anne was born Helen Jo-Anne Yates in Port Alberni, BC, on July 28, 1948. She married Alan in Toronto on January 20, 1973, and moved to Calgary later that year. Jo-Anne worked in nursing until Geoffrey was born in 1974. After Erin's birth in 1977, Jo-Anne worked at Galleria Arts and Crafts and at Heritage Park. Her crafts continue to be sold at Galleria, and her original knitting patterns, Ewe and Me Yarncrafts, continue to be sold in knitting stores across Canada. As an accomplished knitter, Jo-Anne passed her love of her craft on to hundreds of others through her teaching and designs. She also worked for many years at Gina Brown's and was an active member of knitting and fibre craft guilds. She was very involved in community life, being past president of the Westgate Community Association, a Beaver leader and school volunteer. She also started several charity knitting projects which continue today. After Alan's retirement in 2000, Jo-Anne and Alan traveled widely until cancer forced so many changes in Jo-Anne's life. She was determined to be seen as a person, not as a patient, and so continued as many of her activities as possible in her final months. Jo-Anne will be fondly remembered by her family and friends as someone who loved her life, living it without regrets. We will miss her dearly. Jo-Anne is survived by her loving husband Alan; her son and daughter-in-law, Geoffrey and Trina; her daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Rob; her mother Violet Yates; as well as her sisters, Laura and Alice. She was predeceased by her father Walter Yates. An informal gathering of family and friends will be held at Westgate Community Hall, 4943 - 8 Avenue S.W. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2006. Anyone who knows Jo-Anne is invited to attend and to bring their memories (and knitting). Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 (Telephone 403-521-3433). Family members would like to recognize the care and dedication of the medical staff at the Tom Baker Centre and the Foothills Medical Centre. In living memory of Jo-Anne Dyment, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Dear Alan, Geoffrey and Erin.
We were all so deeply saddened by
Jo-Anne's untimely death. Those of us that had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jo-Anne will have many fond memories of her. She always had a smile on her face and her sense of humour was second to none. She will be greatly missed by so many people. Please accept the heartfelt condolences from all of us that knew her here at the Galleria.
I count myself lucky to have known her for so many years.

Dear Alan, Jeffery & Erin,

I just want you to know my prayers and thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Jo-Anne was a great friend to me & I'll always cherish the memories I have of our knitting days in your home. She was so excited when the room downstairs was finished so she could invite us over to knit, chat & eat. I have lots of good memories of retreats where we laughed until we cried. I am going to miss her.

Dear
Allan and family,
I first meet Jo-Anne in Richmond at a West Coast Knitters' Guild
retreat in 2000. Her warmth and obvious enthusiasm made a great
impression on me. I was delighted to hear from her again several years
ago when she was planning the 2005 Gillihook retreat in Calgary, and
asked me to be one of the presenters. I so appreciated her confidence
in me and my work with her many phone calls and e-mails. She will be
missed. Sincerely, Janet

Dear Alan and family,
I am a relatively new Gillihook member, so have not had the privilege of meeting Joanne. Clearly, she was a gifted and special lady. Recently bereaved myself, I know how you are feeling. I send you hugs and prayers.

Dear Alan, Geoff and Erin:
I am so sorry. I wish I weren't on the other side of the country. I wish I could be there to honour and remember Jo-Anne with all those who knew her as a very special human being.

Dear Alan and family,
Please accept my condolences on your untimely loss of Jo-Anne.
Jo-Anne first became known to me more than ten years ago through the pages of the Knitting Guild of Canada magazine. I believe that we first meet in person at a West Coast KG retreat held in Vancouver. I was amazed that someone would be sufficiently dedicated to their knitting to travel this distance for workshops!

Since then I have visited with you and the Calgary KG; Jo-Anne was kind enough to take a whole day to give me my first glimpse of the Canadian Rockies - which will always be associated in my mind with Jo-Anne (they are a very fitting momument).
I last saw Jo-Anne this summer whilst travelling back through Calgary on my way home from the North and having further explored the Rockies. She was looking happy and well and she emanated a certain serentity.
She will be sorely missed and warmly remembered from coast to coast.
