Joan Armstrong Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2025.
Mrs. Joan Diane Armstrong (Cosgrove) passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, in Placentia, California, at the age of 89, following an unexpected illness.

Born on August 22, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, Joan graduated High School from St. Mary's Academy before pursuing her passion for the arts as an art major at the University of Southern California. While at USC, she became a proud member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Early in her career, she worked as a luncheon model at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where her elegance and poise captivated many.

Joan shared 69 years of love and companionship with her beloved husband, Dr. David Holmes Armstrong, until his passing. Together, they built a family filled with cherished memories and deep affection. She is survived by her children: Diana Armstrong Freeman (Bud), David Byron Armstrong, and Scott Anthony Armstrong (Mildred); her grandchildren: F. Julian Freeman III (Melanie), Jonathan Freeman (Marie), Larissa Young (Skyler), Brianna Armstrong, Katelyn Armstrong, Nikolai Armstrong, and Jenna Armstrong; and her great-grandchildren: Lincoln Freeman, Laila Young, and Logan Freeman. She was eagerly anticipating the arrival of another great-granddaughter, due in June 2025, who will carry forward her legacy.

She was predeceased by her parents, Clair Cosgrove and Rosalind Higgins Cosgrove; her husband, David Holmes Armstrong, her brothers, John and Peter Cosgrove; her sister, Mary Cosgrove Liuzzi; her son, Matthew Armstrong; and grandson Jeremy Freeman .

Joan found joy in life's simple pleasures-cooking for loved ones, reading the daily newspaper, and completing crossword puzzles. She had a deep appreciation for the arts, finding inspiration in movies, plays, and literature. She and David looked forward to their annual trips to New York City, where they delighted in attending the latest Broadway productions. Joan also expressed her creativity through interior decorating, making her home a warm and inviting space.

An active member of the Fullerton Assistance League, Joan formed many lifelong friendships within the Fullerton community. Her Catholic faith was a guiding light, providing her with strength and comfort throughout her life. She remained devoted, attending Mass and praying the Rosary in her later years.

Those who knew Joan will remember her as intelligent, witty, and full of charm-a woman whose warmth and vibrant spirit left an unforgettable impression on all who met her.

A funeral service to celebrate Joan's life will be held on March 28, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 585 S. Walnut Ave., Brea, California 92821.

May her memory bring comfort to all who loved her and inspire them to live with grace and vitality.

In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Dementia Society of America in honor of Joan.

I have so many fond childhood memories hanging out at the Armstrong's. I remember my first sleep over away from home was at the house. We pitched a tent in your backyard! When I was home sick Joanie showed me how I could see my house from your backyard and I was able to stay at the sleepover.
I recall the house was always immaculate and Joanie was always dressed to the nines. Another vivid memory is of Dr.Armstrong and Mrs.Armstrong formally dressed in front of the fireplace for a photo He in his tuxedo and she in a very fancy dress. Black tie affair.
They were always the envy of the neighborhood.
God Bless your family

My sweet Joan will live in my heart forever. I had the privilege of knowing her and assisting her in housekeeping for 8 beautiful years. Joan always received me with a warm smile and never failed to ask how my family was doing.
May she rest peacefully

I recall as a child , our parents having cocktail parties at our house. And dancing in the living room. Seeing my parents having so much fun with Dave and Joanie and including me in the dancing! And of course throughout the years of knowing her, always so warm and kind to me! I truly admired her!! And always will!!
