Joan Correia Obituary
She was born in New York City but grew up and lived on her beloved Sassaquin Pond until her passing. Joanie was one of three daughters born to the late John and Joanna I. (Gonsalves) Hansmann.
Joan had worked as a manager and waitress at Pa Raffa's Italian Restaurant for nearly 50 years before her illness took hold, where customers knew her not only by name, but by her long, shimmering red hair carefully tucked up in a bun atop her head or in a ponytail.
Known in close circles as Mrs. C, she was to many a mother figure, a kind, caring, compassionate soul who opened her heart and home to anyone in need.
She loved photography, stained glass art, folk music, and could be found dancing and singing to live bands during the Newport and New Bedford festivals. She also loved spending time either alone or with her best friend Karen down on the shores of Horseneck Beach. She cherished and adored her grandchildren, watching and caring for them until she could no more.
Her family includes two daughters, Doreen Joan Correia of New York and Robin Lou Correia of Rochester; one son, Richard Gary Hansmann and wife Sonia of Sassaquin; two sisters, Lucille Harris and husband Wayne of Acushnet and Arlene Hansmann of Sassaquin; six grandchildren, Richard, Nikolas and Lucas Ketchie, Briana, Isabella and Aliyah Hansmann; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 1-2pm with a Memorial Service at 2pm in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168. For online tributes please visit: www.rock-funeralhome.com

It was very early in my career, my very first job, in fact, busing tables at Pa Raffa's in the early 70's that I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Joanie. She was a great mentor and friend and I actually looked forward to going to work on a Saturday afternoon knowing we would be working a shift together, even though it was typically a beach day I was missing. She was a great mentor and a free spirit who connected with so many people and she will truly be missed. RIP Joan.

My condolences, love and prayers to all Joanie's family. She was my life long friend and I will miss her more than I can express. Thank goodness for all the memories I have of her from over 60+ years. Sassaquin Pond will not be the same without her. When I stay at "Arlene's cottage" I will miss going to Joanie's and calling "Hey Joanieee can you come out and play". She touched many lives during her life time and I hope her family will find joy in knowing we all loved her dearly. Good by Joanie, you will never be forgotten.

To Joan's family - thank you for putting together the photos which give testimony to her life well lived. I only knew her from her years at Pa Raffa's so it is special to see her from her younger years and flower child days! My deepest sympathies to her family. May her memory live forever in your hearts. So sad to say "see you later" to such a special lady! Mrs. C would never say goodbye. I will always remember our Brazil adventure. Doreen, Robin and Ricky, I am so sorry. You were blessed to have an amazing Mom, which makes it that much harder. She will always be with you in your hearts and memories. Be strong and live well. She was a shining example to us all.

Much Love and Prayers to all of Joanie's family and friends! She was a blessing for many people, including myself. Every Christmas I would get a Christmas card crime her - for the last 20 years or so... I will miss getting that card this coming Christmas... Doreen, Robin, and Ricky: So sorry for your loss. I have so many good memories of times spent with all of you and your mom. Horseneck Beach walks, going to see Melissa Manchester, times spent at Sassaquin pond, singing around the piano, eating many vegan creations and the endless philosophical talks. Not to mention the countless times I got to work with your Mom at Pa Raffas. Your mom loved when the "gang" was at the house and spending time sharing her concern, kindness, and advice. Your mom was instrumental in my life especially the summer I came to stay with you. She will be deeply missed. My heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Love Lynne and family
