Joan Elizabeth Murphy (née Hardy), daughter of the late Melvin and Dorothy Hardy, gained her wings on Sunday, April 14, 2024. Joan was born on September 10, 1945, in Washington DC, the oldest of four children (Gail, Rita and Melvin). She accepted the Lord at an early age attending The First Baptist Church of Deanwood, where she was active in the Youth Choir and Usher Ministry. Educated in the District of Columbia Public Schools, Joan was a proud graduate of Spingarn Senior High School Class of 1963. Shortly after her high school graduation, she met the love of her life and Spingarn alum, Lloyd G. Murphy, Jr. ('55). In 1964, after a short courtship, they united in holy matrimony, where they were blessed with two sons, Lloyd G. Murphy III, and Lorne A. Murphy.

Joan had an illustrious career with D.C. Government. Her service to District residents started at the Department of Recreation and ended with the Department of Corrections. She was a member of the D.C. Corrections Team that assisted with the closure of Lorton Correctional Facility. Joan retired with over 35 years of meritorious civil service.

Joan loved cooking, gardening, decorating and entertaining, passions she learned from her mother. At her home in Maryland, she frequently hosted tea parties for her granddaughters, family dinners and socials for family, friends, and co-workers. Joan supported a myriad of charitable organizations and was involved in the homeowner's association.

Joan will be forever loved and cherished by her family and husband, Lloyd G. Murphy, Jr., her sons Lloyd G. Murphy, III (Tahira) and Lorne A. Murphy (Pho), grandchildren: Kalen T. Murphy, Waverly A. Hill and Addison L. Murphy, sister: Rita Hardy Thompson (Alan), nieces and nephews, Leon Russell, LaShawn Halsey (Ramon), Alan Thompson (Cindy), Ryan Thompson (Janae) and a host of extended family, friends, and neighbors.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:30 am, at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, 3000 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Wash DC 20030. The family will forego a repast. The Murphy Family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate souls that attended to Mother in her final days, Brent Chance and LaDawn Curley. Meal preparation was provided by long-time family friend, Taneka Carroll. We are eternally grateful to the host of family members, friends, neighbors, and former co-workers for taking time from their schedules to visit with Mother. May God continue to bless you mightily.
