FINLEY, Joan Marie (nee Dea) April 23, 1930 - May 30, 2003 It is with profound sorrow that the family of Joan Marie Finley announces her passing from life on Friday, May 30, 2003. Joan Marie will be greatly missed by her husband of fifty-three years, John Finley; her children Kathryn, Gerry and Greg; her beloved grandchildren: Kelly, Whitney and Riley Hughes; Tyler and Ryan Finley; her son-in-law Brendan Hughes and daughters-in-law, Carol Finley and Janet Catherine Dea. She is survived by her brothers, Gerry, Billy and Murray Dea and her sisters-in-law, Alice, Anne and Connie Dea. Joan Marie was pre-deceased by her parents Howard and Angeline Dea; her brother Jack Dea and her sisters-in-law Verna Dea and Pauline Dea. Joan Marie was a person of enormous presence and influence and she had a significant positive impact on an extended network of family, friends, students and colleagues. We are all enriched by having known her, benefiting from her endless generosity, her tireless energy and competitive spirit, her keen intellect and the unconditional love she shared with all of us. Her professional career began as a legal secretary for the firm of Duncan and Bowen. From there she joined the faculty at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology where she expertly guided her many students through the intricacies of law and legal administration. She retired in 1988, but continued to be active with the NAIT community. She served on the Association of Retired NAIT Staff executive, the steering committee for NAIT homecoming and lent her energies to organizing golf tournaments and various fundraising endeavours. Joan Marie was a longstanding and active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Edmonton. She sang in the choir, served on the organizing committee for the 100th Anniversary of the parish, and the executive of the Catholic Women's League. She was an avid and accomplished golfer, as well as the all California shuffleboard champion. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Tim Watson and the staff of the Clinical Neuroscience Ward, unit 111, at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, for the excellent and tender care given to our mother. Prayers for the repose of the soul of Joan Marie Finley will be held at St. Patrick's Church, 111811 - 96th Street, Edmonton, Alberta on Monday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church on Tuesday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. She will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan Marie's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta 1825 - Park Road South East, Calgary Alberta T2G 3Y6.
