Joan Gresens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 12, 2024.
Joan R. (Vertz) Gresens, a cherished resident of Flossmoor, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 89.

Born on August 27, 1935, in Two Rivers, Wisconsin to Martha and Walter Vertz, Joan dedicated her life to education and community service, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. Joan was a devoted mother to her sons, Jim (Carol) and Phil (Kay) and a beloved grandmother to Tara (Chase), Nick, and Allison (Justin). Her legacy of love and kindness extended to her great-grandchildren, Ava, Cole, Grayson, and Skylar, who brought her immense joy. Joan was also a loving aunt to Karl, Mark, Rick, Steve, Scott, David, Martin, and sister-in-law Carolyn, and a dear friend to many.

Her passion for teaching was evident throughout her career, as she served for many years in Lutheran schools across the south Chicago suburbs, mostly at St. Paul Lutheran School in Dolton, Illinois. Joan's commitment to her faith and community was further exemplified by her role in founding and directing the handbell choir at Salem Lutheran Church in Homewood, Illinois. Her musical leadership brought joy and inspiration to countless congregants.

In addition to her contributions to education and music, Joan was actively involved in her local community, serving on boards at Tamarac Village in Flossmoor. Her dedication to service and her warm, welcoming spirit made her a cherished member of the community. Joan's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to family, faith, and community. Her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Lois and Walter, and her husband Ronald. As we remember Joan, we celebrate a well-lived life, filled with love, service, and a profound impact on those around her. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at a later date.

Memorials can be made to Salem Lutheran Church in Homewood Illinois or Concordia University- Chicago.
