JOAN HELLMUTH Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 30 to Apr. 2, 2023.
HELLMUTH, Joan P. Died peacefully, supported by her family, on March 13, 2023. Joan was married to Raymond L Hellmuth until he died in 2000. Joan spent much of her life serving others as a former teacher, social worker, and local and global volunteer. Joan had five children, Greg Hellmuth of Brunswick, MD, Lisa H. Thomas and her husband, Tim of Wayland, MA, Margot L. Rohrer and her husband, Tom of Newton, John J. Hellmuth and his wife, Erin of Milton, and Karen Marie, who died in 1975; and she was the grandmother of nine grandchildren, Ryan, Brett, Harrison, Sam, Emma, Joni, John, Jr., Charlie, and Olivia. Joan was born on August 12, 1931, in the Bronx, NY. She was the daughter of Joseph and Marguerite Scott. Joan earned her bachelor's degree at Hood College, Frederick, MD, in 1952 and a master's degree at Loyola College in Maryland. Joan lived with her husband and raised their children and grandchildren in Wayland, MA, for over 40 years. Joan's fondest childhood memories were at summer camp. She shared her passion for camping as a canoe instructor at the local Girl Scout Camp on Lake Cochituate in Wayland, MA. Joan also loved to travel and visited many countries throughout her life. In addition, she dedicated her free time to gardening, singing, and caring for her beloved pets. Joan's life will be celebrated on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at 11 AM at the Babson College Glavin Family Chapel in Wellesley, MA. A luncheon at Babson College will follow. There will be a Private Burial before the Celebration of Life. In place of flowers, please consider donating to YMCA Camp Chickami, where her children and grandchildren, who shared Joan's love for camp, spent their summers. Donations will be received by the West Suburban YMCA at 276 Church Street, Newton, MA 02458, or online at https://www.wsymca.org/chickami-capital, in memory of Joan Hellmuth. Arrangements entrusted to the care of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of WAYLAND.

In 2007, Joan joined a group of parishioners from St. Mary´s Episcopal Church in Newton Lower Falls and St. Paul´s Episcopal Church in Natick (her church at the time) on a week-long mission trip to El Salvador and to our sister parish Santa Maria Vergen in San Salvador. It is easy to recall the year of our trip because whenever the issue of her age came up, she would break into "76 trombones!" Joan was a pistol! She was old enough to be a mother or possibly a grandmother to many on our team and fretted that by coming on the trip she might have taken a seat away from a younger, more productive person. Joan was just delightful and certainly carried her share of the load. We were so thrilled that when she moved to Wellesley, she chose St. Mary´s parish, where she already had friends! That mission trip was a significant milestone in my spiritual journey and I look back on it so fondly because it filled a hole in my soul. And Joan was so important. My wife Mary and I shared other common interests with her. I´m kicking myself that I didn´t find more opportunities to spend time with Joan. Her sense of humor and warmth made being in her company delightful! Tim Green, Wellesley
