Joan graduated from St. Wendelin High School in Fostoria, Ohio, and later graduated from Mary Manse College with her degree in education. She taught school in the Toledo area for 42 years retiring in 2000. Her first years were spent teaching in several Catholic schools for the Diocese of Toledo. She then taught for 28 years in a number of schools on the east side of Toledo. Joan was a voracious reader and kept a list of all the books she had read. Over the years she attended a number of Mystery Book conventions. After her retirement she volunteered as a tutor for the children at the Bethany House women's shelter in Toledo. In her spare time she enjoyed traveling and spending quality time with her family.

Survivors of Joan include her daughters, Julie (Robert) Rusgo of Sylvania and Karen (Jeff Quigg) Hiller of San Francisco, CA; and grandchildren, Adam, Elayna, and Emily. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Raymond Forristell and sister Emily Dauterman.

I'm hugely sorry to hear of Joan's passing. I can recall her turning up to a sparsely attended signing I did in San Francisco and coming out for lunch after, cheering me up immensely in the process. She was a good soul, and the world will be a little poorer without her.
