Joan Hooper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 12 to Jan. 13, 2007.
HOOPER, Joan Ellen "Brighten the corner where you are" Daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend, artist, teacher, free spirit and God-seeker, Joanie died peacefully, as was her wish, at St. Mary's of The Lake, Kingston, on January 10, 2007. A Service of Remembrance and a Celebration of her Life will be held at St. Andrew's By the Lake United Church, 1 Redden Street, on Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. Joan was loved and will be missed by her husband George Linn, son Silvan, daughter Winona, mother Petty Dodds, younger siblings Liz Barrett, Jamie Hooper and Allison Barrett, her nieces and nephews, in-laws and extended family, dear friends and members of her spiritual community; she was predeceased 10 years ago by her father Richard Phillips (Phil) Hooper. Joan was a seeker of inner peace and a creator of outer beauty, sharing abundant wisdom, kindness, patience, joy and love with her family and friends. She inspired us with her creativity, courage, resilience, strength, faith and optimism throughout her life; never more so than over the last years, months and days. She especially made a huge effort to be there for all of us over the holidays, and we will always treasure the "forever hugs" she gave us for Christmas. She leaves us with memories of love and friendship, wonderful and whimsical works of art, much laughter as well as tears, and a deep and abiding respect for the beauty, sacredness, joyfulness and meaning of life. We would like to thank all the health care professionals and dear friends who cared for Joanie so compassionately over the last few years, and especially the nurses at St. Mary's who were angels of kindness and professionalism to Joan and to all of us over the last month or so. It was Joan's strong belief and ours that at last she has found the greater peace that she was always seeking. We will love you forever, Joanie. "...Turn to and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again."

I last saw Joan over forty years ago. She was such a unique person that I have often thought of her over the years--her wonderful aquariums, her proud Canadian heritage, wanting to master the perfect 'Eskimo roll', terrific (and smoke the kitchen out) sticky ribs, that she and her father would drive for an hour so we could see 2001 A Space Odyssey again, her love of stones and wintergreen, swimming between islands on the St. Lawrence River and many other lovely memories. It was a sad shock to find her obituary, but a chance to honour the memory of a wonderful person. My apologies for this late entry, I live in New Zealand and had lost touch.

I am so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. My favorite rememberance of her is with my sister Patrice, and the giddy near-hysterical laughter they always seemed to share, whatever they were doing.

My condolences to Joanie's family. I have fond memories of numerous outings with your family in England, Pennsylvania, and at the cottage. Especially remembered was the adventurous spirit - that was contagious. Joanie will be missed and remembered fondly. Sally Grine and Adam Smeltz

My sympathies to Joanie's family. I had the honor of knowing Joanie through her sister Liz and I know how deeply you will all miss her sweet soul. You are in my prayers as you mourn the loss of Joanie's kind and gentle presence. She has touched many lives and will be sadly missed.

Joan's friendship was one of my life's precious treasures. Her wisdom, kindness and concern made such a difference to everyone whose lives she touched. In recent months, we were all astounded by her unwavering faith, surrender, dignity and courage. The human in me walks with an aching heart and wonders how I will face life without her. The divine in me is wiser and knows that there are no real good-byes. I'll carry her with me always- in my heart and in my prayers. I'm really going to miss her.

I'm sorry to be away in India for Joanie's memorial service. She was a dear sister and friend to Allison and me, and I will miss her very much. I will visit a Hindu temple and light some incense in her memory while I am here. To Joanie's family, I will be thinking of you and be with you in spirit on Saturday. Love, Peter

Joan always knew what to say, and had the perfect words to say it. I loved to hear her speak about her passions. She shared herself so unselfconsciously and nonjudgementally. She always inspired me. In her last days her love, gratitude, faith and surrender were astonishing. I was privileged to be her friend.

Joanie, we will miss you so much!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Joanie's passing. As youngsters our family spent time in Petawawa visiting Uncle Phil, Aunt Pettie and their children. Those times were special and my heart goes out to her family.

I am so sorry to hear of Joanie's passing. My fondest memories of Joanie are from the cottage - her snapping turtle, which she let loose while we were swimming.... her rock polisher, I thought she was the coolest cousin ever. I also remember you played the spanish guitar beautifully Joanie. Now you can continue to make beautiful music forever. Love and prayers to your family.
