Joan Iburg, was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother 'Gra-Gra,' and friend, passed away on February 7, 2022, with her daughter Sharon by her side.
Born on a clear autumn day in
San Jose, California, on November 15, 1951, to Betty and John A. Ketman, Joan was a remarkable woman whose life was filled with adventure, love, and compassion. As a young girl, she graced the world with her melodic voice and talent for playing the 12-string guitar. Her beautiful voice won her recognition and medals at many vocal competitions during her youthful days.
A gifted wordsmith, Joan's knack for writing poems was clear from a young age. Early in her adult life, she had two poems published in a national anthology in 1980 and 1981. As a teenager, she & her best friend would generously offer to clean neighbors' homes at no charge to those in need.
Joan's love story began in high school, where she met the love of her life, Daniel Iburg. After graduating from Willow Glen High School with the Class of 1970, they embarked on a journey of travel and discovery that took them to
Kodiak, Alaska, where they welcomed their first child, Sharon. Joan lived in different parts of the country, including Virginia, North Carolina, and San Diego, before settling back in
San Jose, California.
Joan's fierce independence was matched by her passionate advocacy through writing. She championed causes close to her heart, penning letters to politicians and organizations to effect positive change and right wrongs. Her generosity extended to her family and friends through thoughtful cards and letters, ensuring they always felt remembered and cherished.
Joan's humor, sense of justice, loyalty, and friendship touched the lives of many. She inspired coworkers and friends to support charitable organizations like the March of Dimes, demonstrating her resolve to help others.
Humble in spirit and quiet in nature, Joan never sought the spotlight. Instead, she focused on making those around her feel like they were her only friend, giving them her utmost attention. Her friends often remarked, "if we were on time, we were late," reflecting Joan's punctuality and dedication.
Joan's life was filled with love, and her family was the center of her universe. Her passing is a loss deeply felt by her sister Hollie Ketman, daughter Sharon McBrian, son-in-law Tim, grandson Jordan Boone, step-grandchildren Shannon DeGeorge (Tim), Nathan McBrian (Hallah), Tyler McBrian (Sasha), and her many friends who she shared wonderful times with.
Joan's passing is a great loss to all who knew her, and she is greatly missed. Her life was a beautiful journey of love, family, and service to others, and she will forever be remembered as a shining example of grace, kindness, and compassion. Joan was laid to rest on Mother's Day 2022 in a place she cherished. Her memory will live forever in the hearts of those who loved her, and her spirit continues to inspire others to live with the inspired love and compassion she embodied.
Joan was preceded in death by her father, John Abram Ketman, on August 9, 1989, and her mother, Betty Dilge Ketman D'Angelo, on June 23, 2021. Taken from us too soon, we find solace in believing that God had a special plan for Joan. Her legacy of kindness, advocacy, and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
