I cannot believe it has been 9 years since I last heard your sweet voice Grams. On this anniversary, I just wanted to share another memory that often makes me laugh. I hope some other grandkids remember you doing this as well. On trips to Platte river you would pack your ducky nightgown and on sleep overs at your house you always have this nightgown with a flapping duck bill. Then at some point you would grab crackers and tell us you had to feed the duck. You would lift up the duck bill and crush the crackers and quack like a duck. Then we would all laugh hysterically and think you were the goofiest grandma. Thanks for being so goofy Grams.

Three of my favorite memories of Grandma have to be 1)crying when she was babysitting because I wanted my Mom. I would sit on the steps and tell her to go home, and a few moments later I would crawl into her lap and say "I'm sorry Grandma, I love you." She never got mad and loved me. 2) I would call her "beautiful old lady" and she was always there to listen to my struggles and triumphs. It was just a short walk to visit with her, she was always available. When I was not close her letters updated me on everything little and big, and she always signed "Love and Hugs" followed by either "Grams" or "Beautiful Old Lady." Her repeated advice to try new things, and to always be myself wisely gave me roots and wings (even if she did say not to start dating until I was 30). 3) There are so many good memories of Grandma that I will probably have to write another post, but I loved what a competitive spirit she had. Cards games, dice games, board games, writing games, and word games were best when punctuated with one of her "Woo" outbursts. She made sure to include everyone and no game was too small or big to be ignored. Love you lots Grandma.

Winners!

Oody doody

Let's take our little red wagon to Cuming Street and collect ants for fried ants and chocolate sauce.

Let's do a worksheet.
Let's do a worksheet.
Let's do a I know you don't feel well Grandma, can't you please make another worksheet?
That snowman is different from the other snowmen! Done.
Let's do a worksheet.

Oody doody.

Let's shoot our imaginary friend George, who does all of those bad things we get blamed for, up into the church towers.

Let's lower the thermostat for the Platte River State Park heat pump to 40.

Yahtzee!

Let's crack some crackers in the duck bill of your duck nightgown.

Let's hide at your house because it is time to clean ours.

Oody doody.

Fudge.

Let's fly paper airplanes,
wear green on St. Patty's,
squeeze onto the steps for a photo,
and eat our weight in cheesy potatoes.

Oody doody.

Let's hit your windows with basketballs.

Let's thank All that is good for our time with you.

Let's remember your laugh and hugs and smiles and holiday cheer.

Let's celebrate you as you celebrated us.

When it seems too hard let's say,

Oody doody.

My mom and my husband loved each other very much. They hit it off at the beginning and never stopped accepting and caring for each other. Bob always called her, "Mom."

Looking up to my mom

One of the things I admired about my mom was how she matured in her faith, especially her last years. I know she now knows how much I looked up to her for that.

One of my favorite memories of my mom has to do with the weather. I enjoy cooler weather but my mom enjoyed warm weather, actually the hotter the better. I was scolded more than once for hiding in the fort on "A" street. She would say, "Joanie, get out in the sunshine!" And I would reply, "But Mom, I just want to read in the air conditioning." My mom loved sun bathing. In more recent years, I would go through our shared gate and find her in her lawn chair basking in the sun. I still find myself going through the gate looking for her. I don't totally believe she's gone.

My mom was very young when she had me. She used to say we grew up together. I didn't always appreciate how difficult life may have been for her at times because she was so happy being my mom.

Some of my favorite memories of Grandma all are surrounded with food. She was so very talented at expressing her love through the food she prepared and shared. Her Christmas cookies were an obvious favorite, and even when she was tired of baking she still made all the different kinds that her loved ones wanted- peanut butter balls and bars, no-bake haystacks, FUDGE- which no one can quite get right, spritz cookies and the list goes on. She loved treating all of her grandkids to a special birthday meal- just for them. The holidays were really special every year, filled with joy and the love of the best Matriarch.

Her hugs! And letters! And coffee dates... There are so many wonderful things about this woman. My goodness, am I a fortunate person to have known her. Thanks Grandma for being the best Grandma you could be, your love is always here!

One year ago today we lost an amazing Mother and Grandma. I've never been jazzed about meeting my boyfriend's Mom, and when the time came to meet Josh's Mom I was terrified. He is the baby of the family, her baby. But I wasn't terrified for too long, she was great from the beginning. She was welcoming, loving, and warm. She passed away three weeks after Milo was born and I am very grateful she was able to meet her youngest grandchild and he got to meet his Grandma Wilcox, but it hurts my heart that he'll never experience what an awesome Grandma she was. I'm going to try my hardest to make sure he knows through our memories with her. I miss you Mama Joan.

The last great memory I had of grandma was when she called me Mary's "Man-Friend". When it was pointed out that title might not be appropriate she upgraded me to "Gentlemen Caller" with a smile and a wink. Flushed cheeks and laughs abound.

I sadly didn't know Joan as long as others but I can say she always treated me as if I was one of her own. She would always have bags of candy or other treats ready for me along with her other grandchildren, and was genuinely interested in my well being. She is a bright soul full of mirth and love, as is easily evident on how her children and grandchildren revere her. While she may not be with us physically on this earth her spirit lives on in the family she raised. I'm proud to have known her, even for a brief time, because witnessing a love so pure and and accepting is a rare blessing.

Grams was there for me throughout my life. In grade school Grams would tell me to "kill them with kindness" when I was upset with bullies. Grams said it would be hard but that is what we have to do with difficult people throughout life. I chose Grams to be my mentor in junior high and she continued to mentor me until she died. In high school Grams let me write lots of papers about her. She was my #1 interview. Grams was full of wisdom. She would tell me stories about faith, friendship, love, sadness, and joy. Grams wrote me a letter every week in college. Her letters were awesome, she wrote like she spoke. I hung out with Grams in college a lot more than I ever did. I would pick her up after class and we would go get coffee. She would always encourage me, "keep going to school, you can finish Mary." She wanted to see me graduate from college. Grams was generous, kind, and loving. She led by example. I keep a picture of her at my desk at work, one I took at a coffee/lunch date, it reminds me that love is everything, forgiveness is powerful, and family is about both, love and forgiveness. I love you and miss you Grams.

Last picture I have with her I am fairly certain.

3 of my favorite memories of Grandma of the many I can remember. 1) Teaching me how to make gravy during a Thanksgiving years ago. 2) Making me buttered toast with cinnamon and sugar for breakfast because I was always running late for school. 3) Seeing how much fun she had decorating for every single holiday. She always sent a card or put together some candy. She loved spoiling all of us so much!

No More Lifeguard

Each day I check the chemicals
looking for Ph and chlorine levels.

The weather may be cold , may be hot,
the only deterrent , lightning to keep me out.

I walk in circles preparing to dive,
I miss the daily call, "How's the water ?"

Mom prepared for Aunt Bev's funeral,
the previous night's wake had been good.

No one saw this coming,
no one heard the burst,
the brain just gave one turn
for the worst.

Mom was feisty, she was strong,
now I have no more lifeguard.

Thank you for all you did for
Joan , for me , for all 21 grandkids.

May 22, 2014

Some people leave a mark on a golf green and think they lived a great life. Others leave a mark on people's lives and ask how they can do more. Joan was one who left her mark on so many people. She was half of the dynamic duo of "Joe & Joan". They taught many that the "greatest gift you can give your children is a happy marriage". An example of service rarely seen these days. God has called you home to rest as a reward for a job well done. Here on Earth, though, we are sad to see you go, but happy you are at peace and with your Joe Jr. Rest in Peace, Joan.

Dear Joe, Thank you for sharing your home and Joan with us. God was truly at work when we first called Joan and asked if she would help us with Sarah after school. God brought us to a safe, loving, faith-filled home, a place where Sarah felt loved and protected and where she could have a "snack", take a break, and get ready for the next activity! Its not every child who is blessed with an extra grandparent, but that is how we felt, having Sarah in your home after school. Thank you so much for your kindness. You and Joan will always be remembered in our prayers and I know Sarah will think of the hours she spent in your home as happy and very special. "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." - Maya Angelou. Joan's love took our breath away. God bless her,
