JoAnn Abma, 78, died peacefully on April 22, 2023 in Palm Desert, California, JoAnn was born in Queens, New York on October 3, 1944 to proud first-time parents Anne and Tony Giaimo. In her early education, she participated in Honors/Rapids curriculum, where she earned high marks in all subjects. After graduation she entered business as an actuarial analyst for Johnson & Higgins Insurance Co., where she met the love of her life, Peter Abma. She went on to work as a benefits executive for Allied Stores and Macy's, retiring to Hilton Head, SC with Peter in 1994.

During their 40 years of marriage, JoAnn and Peter traveled extensively and for a time lived part of the year in Holland. In New York, they enjoyed the cultural delights of theater, ballet, art, and music. In Hilton Head, JoAnn and Peter biked by the ocean and delighted in visits b their grandchildren and extended family. After Peter's passing, she learned to play tennis, spent quality time with a close group of girlfriends, and worked at the Island Club Pro Shop. In 2015, she moved to California, where she lived the remainder of her life with Carolyn and DJay Williams.

She is survived by her sister Carolyn, her nieces Sarah and Lisa, and a large clan of Italian-American cousins. JoAnn was predeceased by her loving husband Peter. Through Peter, she is survived by stepchildren Sandra, Pete, Marie, and Stephen, as well as grandchildren, Cary, Luke, Cameron, Kaitlin, Daniel, and Hayley.

Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Cathedral City, CA.
