Joanna McConnell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 9 to Jun. 11, 2023.
Joanna Mae McConnell Hiawassee - Joanna Mae McConnell, 74, of Hiawassee, Georgia passed on to her heavenly home on June 8, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 29, 1949 in Wheeling, W. VA to the late Joseph and Helen Mack.

Joanna worked in many careers including: ballroom dance instructor, TWA airline hostess, executive secretary for the Secretary of State (Ohio), and as Administrative Assistant for the General Managers of Aerospace Organizations. But her most fulfilling role was serving as the Office Manager for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she served many priests who have remained treasured friends. She lived out her faith serving as a Eucharistic Minister, in Ladies Guild, and as a festival and funeral volunteer.

Joanna was devoted to her husband Don until his passing. They worked side-by-side building their beautiful home, golfing, and making treasures for their children and grandchildren. She loved the Georgia Mountains, her birds, gardening and keeping her home and gardens immaculate. Joanna showed her love to her family and friends through her many acts of love.

Joanna is preceded in death by her husband, Don McConnell, parents, and brother Joseph Mack. She is survived by 3 children Teresa (Sam) Purses, Susie (Bob) Shroyer, and Reed (Sue) McConnell, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one sister, Jeanette Schmidtt and many special family.

A committal service will be held on Wednesday, June 14th at Sunset Hills in Canton, OH at 11:00.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville, GA in charge of the arrangements.

To the family far off, please accept my condolences on the passing of my Aunt Joanna. I have fond memories of her teaching me to ballroom dance at a very young age and for teaching me to walk like a lady with a book on my head when I would stay the weekend at my grandma’s house. She had all the cool records and we had fun back then. I’m sure the shock of her passing lingers, but the Lord is faithful to heal the hearts of the grieving. May He provide “the peace that surpasses all understanding”.

My sincerest condolences to you all, Theresa, Suzi and Reed and the entire family. Thank you all for caring for my sister so well in her last days. It means so much to me that you were all there with her. We are all going to miss her so much but I know that God is with us while we grieve. I know that I am missing our daily chats on the phone and texts and you must feel the same. My love and prayers go out for you all. May God grant you His strength and His peace.
Jeannette Schmitt,
Her sister
