Joanne Turner Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Feb. 8 to Feb. 9, 2010.
TURNER, Joanne Anderson, 78, of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully on February 6, 2010 after fighting a valiant battle against several chronic conditions. Joanne was an accomplished musician and voice major, who held a church organist position at age 12. She was the former organist at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Leigh Street Baptist Church and Christ the King Lutheran Church. Joanne was also a former piano teacher and school teacher. Joanne was a faithful member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, where she volunteered as a Stephen's Minister and on the Evangelism Committee. She was also a member of Tri Club Women's Club, a community service organization. Joanne was born on November 20, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Albin and Ingrid Anderson. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine "Christy" Turner Coppola. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. John W. Turner; two children, Warren Turner and Miriam Tice and husband, Doug; and two grandchildren, Douglas and Christine "Christy" Tice. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Anne Livick and Jeanie McKinley and husband, Jim; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Joanne was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was a kind person who will be missed by many. She helped make Christmas Eve family gatherings and church parties festive through her singing and playing. The family especially thanks her caregivers at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, as well as her friends and extended family who supported and visited her during her illness. During these visits she always had a kind word and took time to ask about others. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke Lutheran Church, or to the Tri Club, 8102 Ridge Road, Richmond, Va. 23229.

Joanne was a wonderful lady, friend to our family over the years, and a blessing to me to have had her as a piano teacher years ago, as well as to my brother, Carl. She met my mom, Emma Fleenor, 46 years ago in the maternity ward when they were roommates. Dr. Turner took care of my 4 brothers and me with glasses - such a blessing to my parents! My family loves Joanne and her family. May the memories and knowledge that God has Joanne with Him now bring peace.

Dr. Turner, Miriam and Warren:

I was so very saddened to read of Mrs. Turner's passing. My in-laws, Charlie and Jackie Haas, lived next door to you all for many years. When I was in their home, I have many fond memories of Mrs. Turner and of your entire family. She was a warm, kind and truly delightful woman and it was a pleasure to know her. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I know how much you will miss her.

Fondly,

Betty Haas
