Joe Ebbinghouse Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 8, 2015.
Dr. Joe C. Ebbinghouse, born January 6, 1928 in Huntington, Indiana; passed away October 5, 2015 at his home in Jacksonville, Florida. Joe graduated from Chester Township High School (IN). He was an Eagle Scout, as was his older brother, Tom, and the other seven Ebbinghouse men, including Tom's sons and grandsons. In 1941 Joe was the Soap Box Derby City Champion in Wabash, IN. He graduated from Manchester College (North Manchester, IN) and Indiana School of Medicine in l954. He interned at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. After his internship he served 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force at Patrick AFB, Florida and Bitburg, Germany.

Joe settled in Jacksonville and began 3 years' residency in internal medicine at Duval Medical Center (now UF Health Jacksonville). He was in the private practice of medicine for 35 years and served as the president of the medical staff at St. Luke's Hospital and University Hospital. He was also on the medical staff at St. Vincent's, Methodist, and Baptist Hospitals. He also served 30 years in the Florida Air National Guard as a flight surgeon, reaching the rank of Colonel.

Joe was a member of the Duval County Medical Society, the Florida Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Internal Medicine-American College of Physicians, the Aerospace Medical Association and Sigma Pi Sigma (National Physics Honor Society).
After retirement Joe volunteered as a physician at the I. M. Sulzbacher Homeless Center Medical Clinic. He was especially proud of achieving his private pilot's license later in life.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Hunter Ebbinghouse (nee Baker); and is survived by his loving companion of 12 years, Ella Jones; four daughters: Mary Ebbinghouse (Danny Quitter), Susan Ebbinghouse (Alan Whitehouse), Courtney Ebbinghouse (Tim Ives) and Elizabeth Ebbinghouse (Bill Bowers); two grandsons, Andy (Cayley Pater) and Alex Ives; and his sister-in-law, Anne Ebbinghouse, and nephews David, Rick and Tom Ebbinghouse.
The family is grateful for the extraordinary loving care that Regina, Theresa and Dedra provided our dad. We also thank Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.

Dr. Ebbinghouse will be remembered at a memorial service at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park Street in Five Points, on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. (reception following).

Joe was such a gracious and sweet neighbor. I didn't know some of these things about his background because he was so humble. Always smiling and kind. I am so glad that you shared these wonderful things about his life with us. He blessed so many and may God bless him abundantly! We will miss him very much. So glad he was in our lives! We love you Joe, the Schumachers-Maruchi, Jim, Austin, Anna and Alex

Deepest sympathy to Susan, Mary, Courtney, and Bess on the loss of Dr. Joe. It was always a pleasure and an honor to share his family table for holidays.

He was an achiever all his life, not stopping at retirement. His service at the Sulzbacher Center as a volunteer physician and his commitment to giving gallons of life-giving blood were most impressive and inspiring.

He was a super congenial host and a great man who, from all accounts, retained his scrupulous attention to detail, his sense of humor, and his love of Nature until the very end.

Doctor Joe will be deeply missed.
