I wish Mr. Feeney was alive so that I could tell him how much his singing has meant to me. My Mom and I put on Lawrence Welk every day. She is 98, blind, mostly deaf and mostly in bed. His singing transports me out of my current life and gives me hope.

What a phenomenal tenor performer. He sang with such confidence and clarity of voice. He was able to reach very high notes and made it sound effortless. My wife and I still watch him perform on youtube . He seemed to be a very pleasant person as well, someone you would like to know.

In the early 1960s, I used to sit on my grandfather's lap in our home in Indian Head, Maryland, and watch the Lawrence Welk show. My grandfather played the violin in a band back in his younger days, and he never missed the show. I remember Mr. Feeney's incredible singing even though I was only 6 or 7 years old at the time.

You are still gaining fans, and may your voice live on forever. We just discovered you, Joe. My 18-year-old son, who loves music, came out of his bedroom while we were watching you on Lawrence Welk. He sat down and said, Wow, that's really nice. It's beautiful - and then he went to look up the song to play it on guitar. What a beautiful voice that is still spanning generations and touching us all.

To the family of Joe Feeney: I met Joe in the early 60s when I was a Physics student at LA Valley College in Van Nuys and Joe was spending some time assisting his brother in opening a beer bar, which b had about 10 raggedy stools and an old Pepsi tank that was filled with water ice and Budweiser cans.
I best remember Joe from the conversations we had. Nothing earth shattering, but I remember how easily we talked to each other and how Joe was impressed at my "Physics Major". We did not talk extensively about Physics. or Singers on TV Shows. I came to realize even at my young age of 24 or so that I had a friend in Joe. The entire ambiance of the Beer Joint was set aside and insignificant in our discussions. Joe seemed as interested in what I had to say And I felt as deeply rapt in what Joe had to say.
After many years went by the wayside I began to realize that a very large part of the interest I had in our discussions was the realization that I had never before talked without jumping around searching for the next word that was consistent with what I was trying to say. Every word I used came so easily as did Joe's words.
If the friendship I had with Joe could include the realization that the respect I showed Joe was repaid in Joe's respect of myself. I never lost was the epiphany that that I was being treated as a human being with all the understanding and love that I could feel for another person, and especially love of a man and what amplified my feelings of care and consideration was the realization that Joe Feeney, Irish Tenor took me to the home of my paternal grandfather, born in Laetrim,Ireland retiring finally as the Maetre d' of the Harvard Club in Cambridge, Mass.
Hello and goodbye Joe, my friend, I'm late, I'm late for a very important date, I've got no time to say hello, goodbye, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late.

Joe Feeney was an outstanding singer. I grew-up watching him with the Welk orchestra. Somedays, like today, my thoughts of his performances resonate in my ears. His rendition of "Sunrise, Sunset" is magical. I miss his talent and believe his talent will never be seen, again- except in reruns.
Sleep well, Mr. Feeney

My brother Denny and T delivered the morning newspaper to the Feeneys who lived in Grand Island Nebraska. One night Dad informed us that the family was invited to the Feeneys because their son Joe was visiting his parents and had been hired by Lawernce Welk. Joe sang a few songs for us and we were spellbound with Joe's musical gift. Every Sunday night when we watched the Lawerence Welk show the highlight was listening to Joe Feeney sing. Joe had the ability ro help people through his singing talent.

A tiny black and white 50's tv brought Joe's emotion into my heart. He was truly one of a kind. What a voice. 40 years after I first saw Joe on Lawrence Welk, I found myself playing in the orchestra for a tour of the Lawrence Welk All-Stars. It was a thrill for me to discover that Joe's personality was just as I would have assumed from seeing him on Tv. His voice will never die.

I'm watching Lawrence Welk right now with my 7 year old daughter as I always did as a child. My mother, Glenneta Bettis (maiden name) always told me Joe Feeney was her cousin. I'm assuming he was related to my grandmother, Gertrude Feeney (maiden name) Bettis. He does look an awful lot like my grandma's side of the family. My mom passed away 20 years ago so I can't ask her exactly how they were related but it's bringing back some fun memories to watch this with my daughter. Thanks for the memories... Nora Hayes

I was turning the channel and noticed an old L W show on PBS and immediately thought of Joe Feeney. My parents wanted the show for years and every time Joe would appear (and delight) my mother (still alive and well at 97) would exclaim: "I can't believe how much he looks like Henry Feeney"! My mother's grandmother was a Feeney from Massachusetts & RI. She always felt he was a relative given the eyes, expression, features and everything. Relative or not, he was greatly beloved by all. "My the good Lord hold him in the hollow of his hand".

Mr. Feeney, I was with my mother just an hour ago listening to the Lawrence Welk show...it was the God Bless America one...you were in perfect voice. My mom is 95 now and has dementia but I must play and replay recordings of the show all the time...it brings such comfort to her to hear you sing. So this is to let you know you are still loved and listened to by your fans. A big thank you from my Mom and me, and to wish you peace always.

Joe Feeney and I were fraternity brothers at the University of Nebraska between 1948 and 1952. At that time the tenor, Mario Lanza, was topping the charts with the song "Be My Love."
Joe and I were roommates living at the Sigma Chi house in Lincoln. While playing Lanza's record, Joe discovered that he could perfectly imitate Mario Lanza's voice.
In those days it was the custom, on warm spring evenings, for groups of fraternity boys to wander around campus serenading sorority girls who were eagerly leaning over the balconies of their sorority houses waiting to be wooed.
In his quest to favorably impress these lovely young ladies, Joe played the Lanza record over and over until he could perfectly match Mario's rendition of "Be My Love."
During our rounds of the sorority houses, as soon as the girls on the balconies realized that the approaching seranaders were from the Sigma Chi house, they woud begin chanting:
"We want Joe!"
"We want Joe!"
Except for Joe, none of us could carry a tune, so we would push Joe out in front and begin humming. With his perfectly pitched tenor voice, Joe would send the girls into some kind of a trance by earnestly asking them to 'be his love'.
As the last note faded away, some of the girls would cheer, others would swoon, and a few could be seen actually shedding tears.
(I distinctly remember the night one of the girls threw Joe her bra.)
For the sake of variety, Joe committed two other songs to memory and we learned to hum along. They were::
"My Wild Irish Rose", and
"The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi"
For the rest of our college days Joe sang and we hummed these three songs to the ladies on their balconies.
Ater graduation, I lost track of Joe. Then one evening (circa 1956) I was watching the Lawrence Welk show on my brand new black and white Admiral television set when I heard Lawrence say:
". . . and from Grand Island Nebraska, I bring you ... Joe Feeney!"
And there was Joe, belting out "Be My Love" just like in our college days.
As I recall, the next week Joe sang: "My Wild Irish Rose."
The week after that it was: "The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi."
About that time I began to worry that Joe might be running out of songs. As far as I knew, he only knew three songs.
However, as all of you Feeney Fans know, Joe went on to sing many more wonderful songs on the Lawrence Welk show . . . a few of which might even have caused some girls to cheer, others to swoon and even a few to cry.

We are still enjoying that magnificent tenor voice of Joe's long after he has moved on to that better place. What a treasure he has left behind for us to hear. My mother passed in December, 2008 and I can bet for sure she has looked Joe up and wanted to hear some more songs from him. She and my father watched the Welk family all through the years to the present and rarely missed a show. We always turned the TV in her room at the nursing home the last sixteen months of her life to watch the Welk Show. My thoughts and prayers go to his family even now. Thank you Joe. We owe you so much. God bless all who may read this.

I was so saddened when I learned of the passing of Joe. Though he was an outstanding Irish tenor whose singing I enjoyed for many years, I will always remember Joe most for the way he lived his life...the dedicated husband he was to his wife, the great dad he was to his sons, as well as for the example he set in the way he lived his life as an honorable, moral, and true American patriot. Joe voice has been silenced but he lives on in the terrific reruns that we can still enjoy thanks to our PBS stations.

We were tremendously saddened to learn of Joe Feeney's passing.
Contrary to popular belief, Feeney and his colleagues in the Lawrence Welk Orchestra remain well respected in rock and roll circles. I have published a rock and roll magazine since the mid-1970s, and we regularly post updates about the activites of the Welk alumni.
Joe Feeney was a virtuoso vocalist whose work with the Welk organization was brilliant, innovative and aesthetically rewarding. He will definitely be missed. Our prayers go out to his family.

When I heard that Joe Feeney had died, I felt that another bit of my childhood had slipped away. During my growing-up years my parents watched the Lawrence Welk show faithfully every Saturday night, and since there was only one television, my sisters and I watched too. We got to know all of the band members and singers, and they became like family. As an aspiring violinist, I was especially interested in the violin solos, but who wouldn't appreciate a tenor like Joe Feeney--beautiful vocal quality and impeccable intonation. His rendition of Irish favorites like "Danny Boy," "Galway Bay," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" will live on in our hearts. My condolences to his family.

Words cannot express the extent of the loss of one of the greatest singers I have ever heard. But more than just that wonderful voice, you seemed to feel a love for God within your heart. I am in my late 60's but I cannot remember a time when on Saturday nights time stood still for the Lawrence Welk Show and knowing we would be hearing your voice. Your voice has been stilled here on earth and now you are singing in the Heavenly Choir. The world would be a much better place if there were more Joe Feeney's here. I had this site open writing in my husband's guest book. He remembered Saturdays with Lawrence Welk and when you sang with your son, it brought tears to our eyes because it was so beautiful. I can only imagine what Heaven is like, I only know that one of the greatest voices of all time has been stilled. The silence is deafening. My prayers and thoughts go out to your family.
