It was my pleasure to have Joel as a student in an entry-level programming class at Temple University. We had a very small class so we got to know each student very well. Joel was definitely a rising star. He was smart, mature, conscientious, and very articulate. But what I enjoyed most about him was that he was a genuinely nice person - very polite, kind and considerate. I really enjoyed working with him to solve programming problems and looked forward to seeing him progress through our program. He had a great life ahead of him. This is very sad news. My condolences to his family on his passing.

Continuation from my prior memory...
To the Penrose Family,
I once again would like to express my condolences to you all. I would encourage that you use this song linked below to help encourage and push you through this tough time. It reminds us that no matter what we're going through, whether trials and tribulations, sadness, greiving, whatever it is, God is on our side, and as the title says, "Everything will be alright". I will not stop praying for you, you will always be in my prayers. Keep your trust and faith in God and He will push you all through.

Joel was such an inspiration to us all. Everyone has at least one word of wisdom from him. He was the light in the dark. He made everyone feel welcome, without seeing nationality nor sexuality. He was a true example of an honorable and good person. There was this time where I was nervous for my district audition, and I saw auditions as a bad thing. But he told me a period before getting my results:” you gotta take the bad memories, and turn them into good memories. No matter what you got, learn from it, and do your best next year”. He reached me that no matter what we’re going through, we gotta turn the bad moments to good moments. We gotta see the light in the dark. The good in the hardest moments. And that was Joel. A true inspiration to us all.

Joel was an amazing person. He had a very soft heart and always cared about the others around him. He spread positivity wherever he was and set a very good example to all. He was also a very talented musician, taking the leadership position in many programs in the music department. I remember us playing together in band every day. Whenever there was a sub in for our teacher we would make our way to the practice room or auditorium and play together along with our other bandmates. Him on his baritone, trombone or bells, and I on the trombone or bass. I remember cracking jokes with him during rehearsal or in the halls every day. I also remember the words of encouragement he would tell me each test we had in band, reminding me that I was capable and that I could do it... He was a great man and will be deeply missed by those who knew him. I am beyond thankful for the memories we have made together. I pray for the families' comfort through this tough time. RIP Joel..

Joel,
I know we didn’t know each other that well at all, but what I know is that you were a very good musician and an even better person to be around. Thank you for always preparing hard to make our games that much more amazing. Thank you for making my high school football experience an unforgettable one, I haven’t forgotten about it nor will I ever. Rest In Paradise Brother.

Everyday he was filled with happiness, joy, kindness. I was lucky enough to be a friend of his and got to experience his presence. I got to experience his humor. He will be missed by so many. Love you, Joel. RIP Brother.

Joel was a fantastic student and drum major for the Stroudsburg High School Marching Band. He set the standard very high for future drum majors to follow. He was polite, well spoken and a smart young man. We will miss you Joel. Rest In Peace.

I was fortunate to have Joel in my Kindergarten class at Ramsey Elementary School. He was a friendly, polite, intelligent boy and I have heard he was the same as he grew into a young adult. He was one of a few that year who was already a reader when Kindergarten started. In more recent years, I recognized him immediately as the drum major when watching a marching band performance, and I could tell how passionate he was about music. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of this wonderful young man. The Penrose family is in my thoughts during this time.

A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
To the Penrose Family we are truly sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers will always be with you. Joel was a terrific mentor to many including our children who new him through school and especially all the music programs.
