John Adriani Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2014.
Giovanni "John" Adriani, born March 24, 1919, son of the late Mariano and Rachela Adriani, passed on Saturday, August 9th, 2014 at the age of 95.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Giuseppe, Domenico, George and Joseph and wives Frances and Irene. He is survived by sisters Mary Merse, Rose Stephanson, Anne Gregory, and brothers Dominick and Paul Adriani. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

John retired from PEPCO after 40 years of service. His employment was interrupted when his country called him to serve in World War II. He served from 1941 through 1945 where he saw action in Central Europe, specifically Normandy, the Ardennes and in the Rhineland region with the 28th Infantry Division, dubbed the "Keystone Division". From Normandy, the 28th advanced across western France, finding itself in the thick of hedgerow fighting through towns such as Percy, Montbray, Montguoray, Gathemo and St. Sever de Calvados by the end of July 1944. The fury of assaults launched by the 28th Infantry Division led the German Army to bestow the Keystone soldiers with the title "Bloody Bucket" Division. His service earned him the Good Conduct Medal, an American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon.

John was an independent, noble man who loved his country, treasured his family and lived by a strong set of principles based upon his Catholic faith. Because of this, his family and friends treasure him immeasurably. He is a member of the "Greatest Generation". He epitomized the numerous outstanding attributes which prompted such a label.

Burial arrangements will commence at Huntt's Funeral Home in Waldorf, Maryland. Viewing Tuesday, August 19 from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. Prayers at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Bryantown, Maryland on Wednesday, August 20 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Cheltenham Veteran's Cemetery, Brandywine, Maryland at 1 p.m.

We got to know Johnny when he built his home next to ours in La Plata, MD on Fair Fountain Farm in 1989, and it didn't take long for us to realize that we had a really good guy moving in next door to us. Johnny was a great neighbor, a proud American, stood for what was right, and chastised things that were wrong (as we all should). He really loved his family, and spoke of you often during our occasional backyard conversations held from our tractor seats while taking a break from mowing grass to chat for a few minutes. He was always supportive of our neighborly accumulative effort of maintaining our private farm road, and my wife and I always enjoyed talking with him when we would bump into each other at the mailbox, or while driving along the farm road. We will miss you Johnny. God speed, and Rest in Peace ~ Glenn & Chrissy Strachan.

We loved to hear Uncle Johnny tell stories of his life. He made us laugh and proud to be called his nephews and niece. We love him and will miss him. Until we meet again ~ Tim, Jenny, Philip, Danny and Matthew

PS: A special thanks to Uncle Johnny for his 1973 240Z gem that became my first car.

A character to say the least, the word “unique” can only hope to scratch the surface when describing my uncle. He is and always will be my uncle and a great one at that. He may have passed but he will live in my memories the rest of my life, bringing many smiles, a few cringes and total respect for the things he did and the manner in which he did them. I am extremely fortunate to have had him in my life; I too will miss him dearly while I think of him often.

Uncle Johnny, you will be missed by so many people. Even with our fair share of disagreements on life, you were a strong, loving and independent person. No one could believe that a 95 year old was still driving around and taking care of himself. That was just who you were, it was in your nature. Your strength was so contagious. We are so happy that you were a part of our family. We love you and will miss you a lot.

we will miss you! uncle Johnny.... He told me, when I was young, what a neighborhood lady told him when he was a young boy. She said "Johnny, you are no better than anyone else, and nobody is better than you." thanks for everything
