John Barr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2025.
Passed away peacefully on Saturday after battling Parkinson's Disease.

A prolific photographer, music lover and train aficionado, his collections were the envy of many. John loved a good road trip, always a good excuse to photograph a steam train.

He was a proud graduate of Boston University and earned an MBA from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. John founded his first photo company, Colortek, in Boston and his career spanned many years and organizations, eventually retiring from Kodak in 2001.

A former member of Temple Emmanu-El of Edison and current member of Temple Sholom of Broomall, he valued his Judaism, participating in adult learning, the choir and advisory boards.

John is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Barbara Barr, children David Haddin Barr (Cindy Barry), Sara Mekler (Mark) and Stefani Moon (Brian), as well as grandchildren Amanda (Ryan), Zachary (Anna), Wyatt, Emerson, Quinn, Melissa and Casey (Rachel) and six great grandchildren, sisters Helen Barr and Pamela Marcus, brothers Larry Marcus (Karin) and Steven Marcus, nephew Jonathan Marcus, niece Stella Marcus and best canine pal Charlie.

Preceded in death by his mother Olive Barr (nee: Shacklock), father John Fredrick Barr, stepmother Regina Barr, granddaughter Dana Mekler and beloved dogs Morgan and Tucker.

The family would like to send a special thank you to caregivers Francisca and Rita and the team at Second Family for their compassionate care.

Shiva will be held on Sunday, October 12, 6:30-8:00pm at Temple Sholom in Broomall. A memorial service will be held October 13, at 11:30am also at Temple Sholom. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Parkinson's Foundation, www.parkinson.org or Temple Sholom are appreciated.

It is indeed sad to see John leave us; his memory, however, will linger as we follow in his path. Beyond his contributions to our photo industry, John loved to entertain us with some corny jokes from his repertoire as "railroad conductor/entertainer".
Sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

I knew John for a brief time through his spouse, Barbara, and her sister Pamela. He was a kind, inquisitive, and engaging human being. My condolences to Barbara and the extended family.

I was privileged to be John´s administrative support at Kodak back in the 90´s, based in Atlanta. To me he´ll always be "JB", a sweet friend who shared a dream of opening an ice cream shop in retirement.
He will be missed as long as all who worked with him are still around. Prayers for peace and comfort.

My heart is heavy, yet full, with so many great memories of working with John in NYC.

John was a mentor, friend, and key supporter who made a profound impact on my life. When I needed guidance in my 20s as a Kodak sales rep in New York City, he was always there to offer valuable advice and encouragement. His guidance helped shape me into who I am today.

I have many fond memories of working with John, from calling on customers in the Fashion District and Chinatown to meeting with him over coffee or ice cream (his all-time favorite)! He introduced me to the sweet treat of "Serendipity", a memory that I will treasure forever.

Barbara, I am deeply sorry for your loss. John's passing leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. I will forever miss John, but I will think of him often with admiration and love. May his memory be a blessing to you and your family during this difficult time.
