John Becker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2024.
John Becker, a beloved father, brother, and esteemed physiology professor, passed away on June 7, 2024, in Longmont, Colorado, at the age of 76. Born on March 29, 1948, in Denver, Colorado, John dedicated 40 years of his life to teaching medical students physiology. His passion for education and commitment to shaping minds left an indelible mark on all those he encountered.

In his personal life, John was a nature enthusiast and avid traveler. Despite battling illness in his final years, he found solace in exploring the great outdoors. His love for hiking, camping, and fishing was contagious, and he made sure to instill that same appreciation for nature in his children. John's adventurous spirit led him to hiking in Patagonia, Yosemite, 14er summits, and snorkeling in Los Cabos, among other destinations. He retired to Colorado in 2020 and fulfilled his dream of building an eco-friendly home, surrounded by the beauty of the mountains he loved.

John's quiet demeanor belied his deep commitment to his family and the world around him. He was a dedicated father to his children, Andrew and Cassandra, and a supportive brother to Paul, Mark, and their spouses. John's memory will be cherished by his cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marguerite, and father, Hank.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sierra Club in honor of John Becker's lifelong dedication to environmental conservation and his love for the natural world.

John's legacy of knowledge, kindness, and love for the outdoors will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.

Every time I go to the library, I see his name as a trustee during a successful building expansion.

I first met John while I was a Scholl student on N. Dearborn St. in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood in the late 90's. He initially struck me as being extremely bright, yet very approachable, and encouraging of students. Eight years later, then serving my alma matter as a junior faculty at Scholl College (and now located in North Chicago), John continued to mentor, encourage, and push me. He led with a quiet confidence. We never talked for very long, or in any great depth, we never had to, I learned from his example. What I came to understand is that John was always behind the scenes directing traffic and paving the way so that I, and so many others, could succeed and rise through the ranks at Rosalind Franklin University. This month, I had my last meeting as a faculty member on the RFU Board of Trustees, a position that was last held by a Scholl faculty member some 20 years ago - his name, Prof. John Becker. John's legacy lives on in all of us, his many students, his mentees, his friends and colleagues. I will miss you Professor.

Dr. Becker was one of the kindest, most sincere professors I ever had the pleasure of learning from. He was so patient with students and always found ways to explain the material and meet the student where they were in their learning process.
My sincerest condolences to Dr. Becker“s family. Please know he made a huge impact on the lives of so many he taught over the years.

Dr. Becker was a beloved professor at Scholl College for about 40 years. If you went to Scholl College in 1980 or after, you probably had Dr. Becker for physiology. He was an amazing educator, mentor, and overall person who will be missed!

When I joined the faculty at Scholl in 2015, he was so supportive of me as I transitioned into my new role. He loved his students and had such a passion for education. Thank you for being a great friend and mentor Dr. Becker.

Dr. Becker was such a gem for the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine! He was always engaging and dedicated to student learning. When I first joined Scholl College, I found him inviting and easy to talk to. He was always enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge, resources, and ways to help students fully immerse themselves in the academic program. We even found ourselves volunteering together during a university-sponsored clean up program. My condolences to his friends, colleagues, family, and former students. It was a pleasure to know him. Thank you for your service, Dr. Becker.
