John Michael "Mike" Bennett, 73, passed away on August 22, 2024, in Leigh High Acres, Florida. Born in Columbus, Indiana, Mike was a respected and decorated veteran who served 33 years in the Army Reserve, retiring as an E8 in 2012. His military career was distinguished by numerous awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Award, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Devise and 20 Year Silver Hourglass, and Parachutist Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge w/ Driver-Wheeled Vehicle Clasp.

Mike was a graduate of Columbus High School and furthered his education at Indiana University. Beyond his military and academic pursuits, he was deeply involved in veteran communities, being a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets, and an American Legion Legionnaire and Son.

Known for his reserved nature, Mike carefully chose those he let into his inner circle, proving to be a fiercely loyal friend and family member to those he trusted. He leaves behind his wife of 21 years, Nancy Bennett (Ferrelli); sons, John Patrick Bennett and bonus sons Jimi and Brian Green (wife Colleen); and granddaughters, Ellie, Mimi, and Sadie. He is also survived by his mother, Betty Fish; brothers, Pat (wife Eileen), Timothy (wife Christina), Tom, Scott (wife Cheryl), and half-brothers Anthony, Christopher, and Danny Fish. Mike was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Bennett.

A celebration of life will be held on September 21, 2024, (2 P.M.) at the American Legion Post 343 in Leigh High Acres, Florida. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars in honor of Mike's commitment to his fellow servicemen and women.

I first met Mike when my work in the Nuclear industry took me to Turkey Point in Homestead FL and was fortunate to have a mutual friend of Nancy where I eventually ended up staying with on and off for several years while working at Turkey Point. One story that still brings a smile, the three of us went to a Halloween party at the VFW in Homestead and Mike went as Klinger..dress and all .... wonderful memories

Mike was such a kind soul. Met him first as a patient who then became a friend. I gave his number to many veterans so he could help them to obtain their benefits. He always helped all of them. Always made time for any veteran whether to help with benefits or to be an ear to talk too. He was a special human and will be sorely missed by me and all those who he helped. Much love to Nancy in this trying time. My advice is to lean on your many friends when you need something
