John Bettis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2006.
In the moments after the Steelers beat the Denver Broncos to advance to Super Bowl XL in Detroit, John Bettis and his wife, Gladys, finally got to see their son when he emerged from the stadium to board the team bus.

After hugging his mom, Jerome Bettis turned and hugged his dad, who had attended nearly every one of his son's football games since he was 14.

"Let's go home," John Bettis said to Jerome.

They were all going home, to Detroit, where Jerome grew up, to watch the youngest of their three children end his prolific National Football League career in storybook style.

Less than 10 months after watching his son bask in his finest moment, John Bettis died yesterday of an apparent heart attack while driving home after working out at a gym in West Bloomfield, Mich., a suburb of Detroit. He was 61.

Jahmal Dokes, a longtime family friend who serves as Jerome Bettis' business manager, said John Bettis was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of his SUV after he apparently pulled his car off the road.

According to WIDV-TV in Detroit, a doctor, nurse and hospital technician who discovered Mr. Bettis pulled him from the vehicle and tried to revive him using CPR. Police said Mr. Bettis had no pulse when they arrived and transported him to Huron Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

John Bettis had retired last year after working 31 years as chief electrical inspector for the city of Detroit. He and his wife were living in a home on the second fairway at Detroit Golf Club their son bought them when he signed his first NFL contract with the Los Angeles Rams in 1993.

"He was leaving the gym," said Dokes, who has known the Bettis family for 25 years. "He was very active and he was enjoying his retirement."

Jerome Bettis could not be reached for comment. He was out of town when he learned of his father's death and headed immediately for Detroit.

The Bettis family released a statement asking that their privacy be respected "during this sad time."

"Just a fun-loving, caring dad and family man," Dokes said. "He always had a positive outlook on every situation. He was the man his boys, and his daughter, looked up to."

In addition to his wife and two sons, John Bettis is also survived by a daughter, Kimberly, 39.

"The other guys looked at him as the mean dad, but he was the one they called when they got in trouble or ended up in jail," his son, John, 37, said in a Feb. 3 story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "They didn't have a dad of their own to call."

One of John Bettis' grandest moments came when his son helped the Steelers win the Super Bowl in the Bettises' hometown. He and his wife were such an integral part of Jerome Bettis' life they even attended the Super Bowl parade in Pittsburgh.

When Jerome Bettis left home to attend Notre Dame, his father told him something he never forgot. The message is included in Jerome's new book, "Driving Home."

"I took him aside and told him this: 'Son, I don't have much to give you except a name, but it's a clean name. It's never been on a police blotter, and it's never caused any trouble. See that you take care of it.' "

Right now I'm in a different place,
And though we seem apart,
I'm closer than I ever was ...
I'm there inside your heart.

I'm with you when you greet each day
And while the sun shines bright,
I'm there to share the sunsets, too ...
I'm with you every night.

I'm with you when the times are good,
To share a laugh or two,
And if a tear should start to fall ...
I'll still be there for you.

And when that day arrives
That we no longer are apart,
I'll smile and hold you close to me ... Forever in my heart.

Dear Bettis family,
I've been a devoted Steeler Fan for as long as can I remember and my "fanhood" has carried on to two of my children and my nephew.
There are not enough words or expressions to be said that can express how deeply sorry we are for your loss. Being a true steeler fan means that you are not only a fan of a football team but an extended family member of the whole steeler organization. Your strong family values gave us all one incredible running back who gave steeler fans years of great Nfl moments and with that came the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Bettis and family. Thank you for letting us all become a part of your family. We hope that each day is a little easier and may you hold onto the memory of a great man when the days are rough. All our love,

To the Bettis Family,

The most important thing that I've walked away with after watching John Bettis admire his son's football career over the years is this: Were Jerome Bettis not a football star who reached the heights of fame that he did, his father would've still been just as proud of him for being the decent, caring and responsible person that he raised.
May you take comfort in the love and admiration that have been shown to you by the lives you've touched, both on AND off the field.

Mr. Jerome Bettis,

May God be with you during this time of sorrow. Putting aside the professional accomplishments you made so far in your life, be proud of the personal accomplishments of being a great son. You can see that your Father was very proud of you as he and your Mother cheered for you at your games. The look in his eyes was for the joy and happiness of his son succeeding not for the glory or bragging rights of having a legend as a son.

Living out of state is hard now when it comes to watching Steeler games, but when they are aired we are glued to the TV. Part of the fun was not only watching you and your teammates, but when they showed your parents in the stands cheering you on tears came to my eyes because you gave them so much happiness.

I lost my Father earlier this year and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family.

John Bettis will never be forgotten for when we see you smile, we see a part of him smiling too.

Dear Jerome and Bettis family, I have had the pleasure of meeting you and your Mom several times at the Steeler Fashion shows and I never will forget the kindness you showed to my Mom and myself when we met. You are a very special family and we grieve with you for the loss of your father. He and your Mom were shining lights and you make them proud at every minute. Please know that there are hundreds of thousands of prayers going up for you and for your family to find peace in this time of great sorrow. We cry and rejoice with you during this time and you are not alone in your sorrow. I the words your father said of giving you his name...not only have you not had it placed on a police blotter, you have turned it into a legacy by taking the love and faith that your parents instilled in you and lighting up the world. You are all in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

God bless John Bettis and the Bettis family in their time of grief. As a Steeler fan and with what Jerome meant to Pittsburgh, you are family to all Pittsburgh residents, we all lost a family member along with you. Our deepest sympathy is with you all, but John will always be with you in your heart.

It's a shock and a tragedy to lose someone so young. I lost my father just prior to his 51st birthday. It really changes everything. I wish the Bettis Family the best in this trying time. Be glad for the time you had together.

Jerome,

I have never lost anyone close to me as of yet so I cannot say that I understand what you are going through. But I wanted to say that I am deeply sorry for your loss and I wish you and the rest of your family well during this sad time. You and your family will be in my prayers. Take care.
