John Bland Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province on Jan. 26, 2005.

BLAND _ John David. Born June 22, 1942 in North Vancouver, died tragically and senselessly on January 19, 2005. He is survived by brothers Simon, Tom (Grace) and Don (Mary) and their children and his many friends. Dave began his working life as a Metallurgical Engineer for Alcan in Kingston, Ontario. Subsequently he taught High School Physics in a bilingual school in Ottawa. While in Ottawa he coached boys basketball and during that time he realized that his lifetime vocation would be helping kids. He returned to the west coast and spent the last thirty years helping others through his job in the mental health field. His love of sports and travel gave him a very active and fulfilling life. During this very sad time, a private remembrance will be held. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made to the Big Brothers organization in Dave's name if so desired.

I met David in 1991 while partaking in the Excellence Series where he was an assistant both at The Wall and Advancement I was involved with. Although I didn't have contact with him afterwards, I remember him as quiet, caring, compassionate man. Striving to bring out the best in those of us he was 'working' with during these workshops. There are absolutely no words that can describe your sorrow and this senseless tragedy. May you, his family and friends, know that he did make an impact on those he met, even if for a brief time. Sharing in your grief, sincerely
