John Bradfield Obituary

(03/12/2003) John West Bradfield passed away peacefully at home following a two- year bout with cancer. J.W. was born in Austin, Texas, on February 22, 1924, to Dr. J.W. and Mrs. May Parkhill Bradfield, both preceding him in death. He is survived by two sisters, a niece and nephews, all of California, and his wife, the former Gethrel Franke. After graduating high school in 1942, from the Alabama Military Academy, the Marion Institute, he entered U.T. Austin in Pre-Med, joining the Sigma Nau Fraternity, leaving shortly thereafter to volunteer for the Navy. He served aboard ships and land in the Asian Theater until he received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Returning to U.T., he completed a BA in 1954, while working at the Department of Health and acquiring real estate. He received an MA in 1958. Completing 33 of service in the Hearing Division as a Child Health Specialist, he retired in 1979 from the Health Department. J.W. was a land developer in the Central Texas area, raising longhorns and exotic game for many years. He was a member of the Sheriff's Association and the Texas and U.S. Longhorn Associations. A private graveside service was held March 10, 2003, at the J.W. Bradfield plot in the Oakwood Cemetery Annex. Arrangements were handled by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N.
