SUMMERFIELD- Mr. John Thomas Brittain Sr., 79, died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at his home following a brief illness.
Mr. Brittain's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Summerfield United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kelley G. Groce officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A Guilford County native, Mr. Brittain was born November 20, 1927 the son of the Guy D. and Anna Wilson Brittain. John served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and for 22 years thereafter. Following his retirement, he worked for a shipping company in Philadelphia, Pa., for 26 years, returning home to Summerfield in 1993. He was also a longtime member of Summerfield United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Carol Brittain, of the home; children Annabel Jane Peters of Kernersville, Braxton O. Brittain of Summerfield, John T. Brittain (Tom) of Florida, step-daughter Denise A. Schwartz of Vincentown, N.J.; five grandchildren; sister Elizabeth (Bibs) Williamson of Lake Waccamaw, N.C.; and brother Robert W. Brittain of Summerfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents Guy D. Brittain and Anna Brittain Martin, sisters Frances Catherine and Annabel Jane, and brothers Guy D. Brittain Jr., James B. Brittain, Braxton C. Brittain, and William C. Brittain.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerfield United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, PO Box 639, Summerfield, NC 27358 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
