John CADIEUX Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, 2011.
CADIEUX, Brigadier General "Jack" John Paul Anthony
Peacefully, with family at his side in his cherished cottage Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the age of 76. Jack was proud to call the Royal Military College (RMC), McGill and Harvard his Alma maters and received word Friday, September 30 that he has been designated to receive a Doctor of Military Science Honoris Causa from RMC at the fall convocation in November. He led a full life with distinguished military service followed by many years in federal public service and the private sector. He was passionate about work, love, family and friends and in his retirement was fortunate to be able to often stop and smell his beautiful roses. He is survived by his beloved life partner Ruth Watson, children Paula, Michelle, Roisin, Jaqui (Marc), Eileen (Martin) and John (Justyna) and their mother, Agnes McBride. Grampa Jack to Noemi and Dalina (Paula), Giuliana and Felix (Roisin), Jordan and Bernadette (Jaqui), and Olivier, Sophie and Henry (Eileen). Brother of Lorna Kelly and uncle and great-uncle to many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother (Clare O'Grady), father (Tony Cadieux), younger brother Gerry, niece Danielle and his eldest son Patrick. We would like to give special thanks to palliative care nurse Gini Jarvis and Dr. David Gold for their compassion and tremendous help. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) Wednesday, October 5 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial Mass to be held at Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, 385 Sussex Drive, Thursday, October 6 at 2 p.m. Interment and reception to follow at the National Military Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue. Donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Dear Ruth

Sorry to hear about Jack's death. Robin and I were talking about the two of you last weekend. About five years ago we purchased a property on the Trent water system and it has always reminded us of what the two of you did so many years ago. Our warmest thoughts are with you. With love. Words cannot convey our sadness and we feel blessed that we saw you both last October and have wonderful memories to sustain us.
Jack was not only a friend , but also a mentor and we shall not forget the kindnesses he showed to us both.
Please keep in touch, Ruth.

I met Jack Cadieux via Harvard University Club, where he was always kind, compassionate to fellow members. Jack was most generous in donating his time and financial support to charity initiatives, including CHEO, Haiti Solidarity and Harvard Student Scholarship Fund. He was a caring and engaging thinker of exceptional depth and humility.

As President of Harvard Club, I valued Jack's precious advice and mentorship. A couple of years ago, during a Harvard conference hosted by the French Embassy, I asked Jack to thank the Ambassador François Delattre for his hospitality and insightful speech on the role of France in the world today. Although the request was impromptu, Jack spoke magnificently thanking our host and referring to the deep bonds of kinship and friendship between France and Canada.

Words cannot convey my gratitude and admiration for such a remarkable and warm friend, whose unwavering commitment to fellow alums, alma maters and the children and poor, were inspiring to all of us, at Harvard University and Harvard Club.

To Ruth and Family members,

Jack was a great work colleague; we shared interesting times at the Correctional Service of Canada.
Jack served his country in his heart and in his deeds.
I knew that Jack cooked, but we didn't get a chance to talk about husbanding roses,a satisfying pastime, to be sure.

NO. NOT YET!
TOO SOON! YES, DEFINITELY TOO SOON!
WE WILL MISS HIM!
