John Canessa Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2023.
John Charles Canessa passed away on September 30, 2023, at the age of 70. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who enjoyed fast cars, big ideas, and good food. John spent his life learning everything he could, helping everyone he met, loving his family and friends, and experiencing all that life had to offer.

John was a visionary who always dreamed of making the world a better place through technology. He was passionate about software engineering and invented many technologies we all take for granted today. He also ran a well-regarded blog where he shared his insights and opinions, with a focus on helping others learn about crafting software. John loved to travel and explore new cultures and cuisines. He was an avid reader of all things non-fiction and was always reading (and writing in) at least one book. He had a great sense of humor and was generous to a fault.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Giuseppe and Graciela Canessa and his sister Teresa. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carmen; his sons, Giancarlo and Gino; his granddaughters, Gabrielle and Natalie; his grandsons, Marco, Leo, Gianni, and Enzo; his sisters, Cecilia and Dora; many extended family and friends; and the stories, software, and recipes he created and shared. A celebration of life will be held at Mendakota Country Club on November 5, 2023, from 3-6 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please make any donations towards Mayo Clinic Cancer Research.

Well I have nothing but fond memories of John and the Canessa SENCOR family. John introduced me to a few life experiences which I´ll always remember. From shooting his 44 at the range (crickey what a gun); the drive from MN to Chicago for RSNA in snow (hate snow); Thanksgiving with his family and John introducing me to buffalo wings (man were they hot) oh and Ray´s BBQ sauce which I still use today! The best natured bloke I´ve ever met with such an infectious smile! Sadly gone too soon......RIP mate!

"I got to know John through his son Giancarlo when my wife and I first moved to Rosemount. Giancarlo and I shared many interests in MN and we soon became close buddies.
As with good friends I was invited to family events. I got to meet and talk with John, GC's mom and many other family members. John immediately treated me with a rare kindness. Having lost my own father years earlier, I truly appreciated him as an exceptional individual and as a father figure.

Over the years, Giancarlo would say to me that John had enquired about my well-being or that he had made some kind remarks about me. I always found these gestures thoughtful and rewarding to me.

John was an extraordinary human being, always exuding a natural warmth and charm. His mannerism made it so easy for people to engage with him.
I once was curious about his well-kitted BMW that he drove at the time. In response to my curiosity, he gave me 'the look' and said, "its just a fancy car, yours is more economical".
Here was a man who addressed the world with simplicity and a profound earthly wisdom, which in time subsequently resonated well with me. My brief commentary here are but a summary of the good memories I have of John.

Nevertheless, I will say the following with a very strong conviction. Giancarlo is one of the few true and dear friends I have, and that is partly testament to his father and how he was raised by John. By a loving father, a worldly fellow, an erudite scholar, and a man who cultivated a 'family-first' approach to life.
John was an outstanding individual, who was loved and celebrated by all, from immediate to extended family, to just about everyone he interacted with.

To the entire Canessa family, I would like to express my profound condolences. I would however also like us to celebrate a man who set a master template for his family that will forever remain unbroken. While John will naturally be immensely missed, his legacy will live on forever in all of us that he has left behind. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. Amen."
