John Clokie Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province from May 26 to May 27, 2007.

CLOKIE _ John Kenneth Alexis It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on May 22, 2007 at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his loving family, wife Loraine, daughter Allison Millar, sons Gordon (Daphne), Bruce (Lisa), and his grandchildren Taylor, Charlotte, Lauren, Christopher, Rachel, Brooke, Celina and Grace who adoringly called him Poppy, also brother-in-law Douglas Coakwell (Carole). Ken was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on August 18, 1924, where he completed high school. He then received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba, and completed his internship at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg in 1948. After practicing general medicine in Val Marie, Saskatchewan for two years, he did postgraduate studies in obstetrics and gynecology at Vancouver General Hospital. He then started his family medical practice in the Dunbar area of Vancouver to which he passionately devoted his time for 35 years, earning the respect of both patients and colleagues. He also enjoyed the honor of being the on-campus physician serving the professional teaching faculty at UBC for many years. Ken loved life balancing every moment between his dedication to medicine and his own leisure time. He excelled in sports, and as a student, pitched his medical team to victory in baseball. He enjoyed racquet sports and a healthy recreational lifestyle, with a special passion for golf, hiking, bird watching and boating. He lived his life to the fullest, and brought much joy to all of us that knew him. His commitment to his family was unparalleled, which brought him a great source of pride and pleasure. Very special thanks to Dr. Wayne Smith for his wonderful care and support over the years, and to the nursing staff at Lions Gate Hospital. A private family service is being held. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Diabetic Association would be deeply appreciated. Hollyburn Funeral Home 604-922-1221

Dr Clokie was our family physician for many years. He delivered all four of us kids and unfortunately stopped delivering babies a month or two before my first child was born, but did care for her until we moved out of town. I remember him fondly for his warmth and kindness through all the scrapes, stitches and the broken bones of my childhood. My condolences to the family.

Dr. Clokie was our family physician and delivered my mother's 7th and last child in 1957. Although it has been many years since I have seen him, I was taken by his picture in the newspaper and remembered those very kind eyes and gentle caring manner from when I was a little girl. May I offer my condolences and hope your memories will sustain you through this most difficult time. My very best wishes to you.

Dr. Clokie was our family physician after we moved to the Dunbar area in 1985, and until he ceased his practice. He was a very good family doctor. He was a sensative and caring man who put his patients first. We still remember him often and speak of him with high regard. Florence and I send our regards and sympathies to his surviving family members.
