I just read the obituary of Dr Collis, I am so saddened by the news. I was a resident under Dr Collis in 1974 when he first came to St Lukes after he left the CC. I enjoined my rotation with him and I learned from him like no body else. I always and ever since considerd Dr Collis the best technical Surgeon I have ever seen. I learned from him immensely. He is without pioneer in so ma
ny aspect of spine surgery. we will miss him, RIP John.

Dr. Collis was the absolute best neurosurgeon I have ever met or known, he made it possible for my dad to walk, he also rebuilt my Mom's spine. He will be forever missed and forever known as the best. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him

Dear Collis Family - When I read in the Koinonia that Dr. Collis had passed away, I was saddened for your loss and for the loss of a great man. Unfailingly kind and gentle, always with a gracious smile and with a serenity that was grounded in his faith, Dr. Collis epitomized a true gentleman. His leadership in the church will be greatly missed, but not as much as his presence will be. May his memory be eternal and ever within our hearts. Much love, Paula

I had the honor to work with Dr.Collis back when his practice was Collis, Kim, and Associates. I am a nurse and learn so much from him. He taught me how the body works and I was truly blessed to have worked with him. My heart goes out to his family. He is the most amazing human being I have known. I will miss him and loved him.

My memories of cousin John are of a truly elegant man. We didn’t see each other often as our side of the family grew up on the West Coast. What I remember is there were three main subjects that interested John most; faith, family and medicine, in that order. Every time I had the privilege of being in his company I learned something important about how to live a better life. His humility presented him as an ordinary man, but his life achievements tell us he was extraordinary!
My profound sympathy to my dear cousins Helen, Maribeth and John. How blessed to have had such a faithful and loving husband and father. May his memory be eternal.

Dr. Collis was a true gentleman. He had respect for all the people he worked with at Saint Luke's Hospital and St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. He always had a concern for the care of his patient and strove to create the best team of people to accomplish that. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family. He was a deeply religious man who practiced what he believed. He was truly a giant in the field of spine surgery. May he rest in peace.

We will miss Dr. Colis and his gentle, wise presence. Dr. Collis was instrumental in the Drenen family realizing that Sts. Constantine and Helen was the parish for our family because he a key figure in making this parish a place where love and study of the scripture was valued.
May his memory be eternal. We are praying for the entire Collis family.

I was so saddened to read that Dr. Collis had passed away as I really believe that he gave my life back to me in 1979. I am a former patient of his at St. Luke’s Hospital. He performed my disc replacement surgery and made my body whole again. I was so frightened and I will never forget when he told me he could help me return to a normal life in such a compassionate manner. He absolutely did exactly that and I have been pain free to this day and still live a very active life. I thank God for having brought Dr. Collis into my world. I have never forgotten him and want to extend my very heartfelt sympathy to his entire family.

We referred patients to Dr. Collis for over thirty years. I was always impressed with his honesty and integrity, his sense of caring for our patients. Every patient I sent had a most favorable experience. He was a rarity amongst physicians and will be missed. Good job John. May you rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Collis & ALL their family . Where do I begin to say first & foremost what a GODLY CHRISTIAN MAN he was . I had the honor & privilege to work in the OR at St Vincent Charity Hospital with him and his team of workers . It was like working in a slice of Heaven . So well organized & easy to follow . He treated the team to many a lovely lunch as well . He never got upset when you asked questions either always responding with a kind & gentle answer. I learned so much just by watching him . Referred many a friend & family member to him without thinking twice . I was a pt on OR table for back Surg several yrs ago , went into Surg knowing I was in The Great physicians hands . Fourteen yrs later I am still doing very well & went back to snow & water skiing feeling great ! He was always giving to others . Without a doubt he has heard “ Well done Good & Faithful Servant !”
I am sure ALL his family , especially his dear wife have sacrificed as well for others so he could help them . I am grateful to you ALL ! I will continue to UPLIFT you ALL to GOD . In His Grace . Barbara

A very sad day for me with the passing of Dr. Collis. I had a bad car accident at 26 years of age. I had up to six months to live without the head surgery. Dr. Collis operated on my head on September 27,1975 for nine and one half hours. I have lived on to have a very normal life for most people to see. getting
married, having a child, working, walking and talking etc. Please know that I share your sorrow. Your family are all in my thoughts as Dr. Collis has been in my life all these years.

Dr Collis was an exceptional physician, surgeon, and care giver. He operated on my spine 17 years ago and gave me the ability to walk again pain free, ride a bike, pick up my young children, and even complete a sprint triathlon too. I made a point each and every year to stop by his office on the anniversary of my surgery to personally thank him, shake his hand, and give him a big hug. Thank you for giving my life back to me. Rest In Peace. Sal Fragapane

In 1986, my wife (then 48) was virtually an invalid because of degenerated spinal discs. Referred to Dr. Collis by two friends who were former patients of his, she had disc-replacement surgery at SVCH that summer. One of her fellow patients was an elderly woman from Pennsylvania, whom no other physician would even consider as a surgical candidate. My father was a physician and surgeon, so I grew up in a medical household, and I recognized immediately that Dr. Collis was that rarest of medical birdsa physician who knew *exactly* how good he was, and neither shied away from challenging cases nor extended his reach beyond his abilities.
My wife's back is still pain-free and I know she joins me in mourning Dr. Collis' death but rejoicing in his long, fruitful life. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Dr. Collis was "John" to me as fellow medical colleague and local "brunch" meals together. The only words for him are angels of Seraphim level. Deepest sympathy and condolences to his family, friends, and all the world because he was proof that God is here. He is in Eternity laughing at us and will help whenever asked. Is there a funeral card available?

Helen, (Miss Levas), I never knew John; however, you were the most influential teacher I had at Lafayette high school, and I think of you so often. I do believe we ran into each other at some time in the last ? 20? years. I'm so sorry for your loss. Your husband had a brilliant career of which I'm certain you are very proud. But that doesn't end the pain; just know that a former student is thinking of you. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
