Corelli, John C. ALBANY In loving memory of John C. Corelli, 86, who passed away in his sleep after a long illness at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital on Monday, April 10, 2017. Born on August 6, 1930, in Providence to Italian immigrants, he was first generation Italian American. He graduated from Providence College in 1952, received his master's degree from Brown University in 1954, and obtained his doctorate in physics from Purdue University in 1958. Dr. Corelli moved to Schenectady and worked at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory before accepting a teaching position in the Nuclear Engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy in 1962. He spent the next 35 years as a professor in various engineering disciplines including thermodynamics, nuclear physics, radiation damage in materials, and semiconductor physics among others. In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at the North Bethlehem Fire Department for nearly 20 years and served as the fire commissioner. He also took great pleasure with his work as Santa Claus at Crossgates Mall for 17 years, bringing joy and hope to tens of thousands of visitors over that time. Upon his passing, he was accepted into the Anatomical Gift program at Albany Medical College, where he will continue to teach a new generation of medical students. Dr. Corelli was preceded in death by his parents, Giovanni and Immacolata (Calderelli) Corelli; and his brother, Gino Corelli of Johnston, R.I. He is survived by his partner of nearly 35 years, Brenda Zelenke of Albany; daughter, Cara Corelli of Troy; son, John Corelli (Eileen) of Melbourne, Fla.; as well as his adoring grandsons, Tyler Corelli of Troy and Christopher Corelli of Melbourne. He is also survived by sister in-law, Barbara (Bolton) Corelli of Johnston and several nieces, nephews and cousins. I was deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. We were colleagues at RPI for many years. He was always ready and willing to help others. I will always be grateful for the guidance he gave my daughter when she was to be interviewed for six-year medical programs. He was admired and respected for his scientific achievements, but to me he was the ideal of a college professor, the type of person who by example served as a wholesome influence on young people.

John played Santa for many years at the Cohoes Social Club for people who struggled with a mental illness. I cannot tell you how much he brightened the holiday season for people. John was a very smart man, but most importantly, he had the biggest heart in the world! May he rest in peace in Gods care now! We will miss you John!

To the Corelli family,

I am so sorry for your loss.

Dr. Corelli was a very nice man and I enjoyed his visits to me in Civil Enginnering where he came for as he said "the best coffee he ever had". I also looked forward to Christmas time and my visits with Santa.
