John Crockett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 23, 2011.
PORTLAND - John Frederick Crockett, 59, formerly of Machias, passed away April 20, 2011, after a brief illness. John was born Sept. 5, 1959, in Machias, son of the late Clyde and Katherine A. (Foss) Crockett. He attended schools in Machias and was a member of Machias Memorial High School, Class of 1969. John was a meat cutter by trade and was well known in the Machias area before working at Paul's Grocer, Portland. The past few years he was employed at the Salvation Army Shelter, Preble Street, as a jack-of-all-trades maintenance man. John was passionate about woodworking and loved the light pine finish. He also collected stamps and greatly enjoyed outdoor activities, especially the times spent at Bog Lake. John was also a great storyteller, who captivated his audiences. He is survived by his two daughters, Laura C. Blake and her husband, Rob, of Hampden and Abby C. Gray and Todd of Marshfield; and their mother, Diane C. (Altmannsberger) Crockett of Machias. He also leaves his four grandchildren, Keenan, Ryley, Allison and Jillian; as well as his sister, Helen Wass of Cherryfield; and his nephew, Kenny Melillo of Guilford, Conn. He will be sadly missed by not only his family, but his many great friends in Machias and at the Salvation Army ARC. John was the father of the late Matthew A. Crockett, who passed away in 1979. Services will be private and arranged by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army ARC, 30 Warren Ave., Portland, ME 04103. Arrangements are under the direction of Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services of Portland, 981 Forest Ave., Portland.
