Too whom it may concern. Mr. Crump was a phenomenal speaker, coach and mentor. I was blessed to be in his VA leadership course at the Puget Sound VA in 2018. I remember speaking to him in depth about military and operations around the globe. Mr. Crump was a man of integrity, grit, and unquestionable intestinal fortitude! I really will miss Mr. Crump I am working at the VA in OKC, and I always look back at my emails from him from the Leadership course I attended with him. He said "find something you love to do, and do not let the pay change your core belief's". Mr. Crump made it very clear that as we would transition to greater opportunities, to take inconsideration who we know we are. Not what we think we are. He was clear to teach us that. Great, great, great man! To the family I will never forget Mr. John B. Crump! He was a fantastic mentor and leader! May GOD rest his soul and may the family look back and see how he lead a beautiful life. - Kenneth D. Williams HM2(FMF/SCW) RET. USN / Program Support Assistant VAMOKC.

For nephew John's 6th birthday, I gave him a casting rod. Sometime later, he informed me that he had learned to cast, but that he had one question. "What's that?" I asked. His response: "Where do you attach the fish?" He was a person of whom all who knew him can be proud. -- Griff Crump

During my first couple of evaluations of Cadets John said you did a good job on your evals I see the intent. I want you to read these cadet (MS4) evals that they did on MS3 During the STX Lanes.
In other words learn how to write better and effectively.

The first time Sandy and I met John he was on his way to JBLM for some summer training. An inexplicable bond was instantly made. He was that kind of guy!

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of John and can tell you he certainly left an indelible mark on me. He was the first person I truly engaged with for VA Puget Sound and his onboarding was an experience I'm trying to pass on to others. He was incredibly selfless, eloquent and capable. I enjoyed coming on for the introduction briefings during NEO when he was running that to address the newest teammates and John would hold the fort until we arrived with addressing issues, questions and just being amazingly human. When he left it was one of those events I could not miss and glad I didn't. He was a true Soldier and had the flank. Honest, affable and always leaning in, he was already a huge loss at that time so I can only imagine now. Many are grateful, and frankly better, for having known John. Condolences to his family and close friends.

My deepest condolences to MAJ Crump´s spouse and family. I was fortunate enough to learn from him as a cadet at the University of Arizona. His mentorship, anecdotes, leadership lessons, and dedication to us students and the ROTC program has shaped me into the officer I am today. Rest in peace, Sir.

One of the best hero's in more than one way. This obituary brings me to tears. John was a kind and patient person. He made everyone feel important and equal. His work ethic and integrity were something to mirror. His impact on so many different walks of life will not be forgotten and his legacy will live on through us. (LEAD). Rest in heavenly piece John, you made a difference.

Good morning from American Lake VA campus. I worked with John at VA Puget Sound for six years. I knew of his long fight with cancer and his determination to keep contributing as he fought it off. That is what I will remember of him. "I will not yield, to kiss the ground before young Malcolm's feet." He did not yield and he lived and died on his own term. Well done!! Time to rest, Soldier.

I am so sad to hear that John has passed away. I am so grateful that I had the fortune of being in his Leadership Effectiveness Accountability and Development (LEAD) training class at VA Puget Sound. His LEAD program is what gave me the confidence to trust myself as a supervisor. He effectively taught me what it takes to be a leader. He demonstrated what a responsible supervisor looks like. I have been at VAPSHCS for 23 years and have taken a large share of leadership classes. His class surpassed them all and now I cherish the lessons. Thanks John!

So grateful for the training he provided here at Puget Sound VA. Thru the course that he presented he helped me gain confidence in my work and how to present to groups which in turn helps the VA organization be a better place to be and work.

When he said "We´re not here to develop lead from the back kind of guys, we´re here to develop lead from the front kind of guys" to a fellow Cadet! It was AWESOME to see that kind of confidence placed on the importance of setting the example.

It's hard to imagine that a man that did that much and was always making me tired just watching him has gone to give upstairs a workout plan. I not only enjoyed working with John Crump, but University of Arizona ROTC wasn't the same without him. Til we see each other again Sir.

John led the VA LEAD program I participated at Puget Sound VA, he counseled me with his steady ,calm, and relentless strength. Ill never forget our conversations that helped me navigate some tough feedback that I could use and others to disregard. He had a way to say few words with impact....I am grateful for his time and commitment to the VA and LEAD program. May he forever rest in peace! You have left a legacy here at Puget Sound John!

John is the definition of a great leader. I am fortunate to have encountered a man of his caliber when I was starting my career. I will always remember his stoic composure that veiled his enthusiastic passion for developing leaders.

John was an instructor of mine. Being Navy, we took pot-shots at each other when people were not around. I'd say "Army, you mean the Ain't Ready for Marines Yet Army?" to which he would respond "Yeah, that one." Comparing military careers we learned we were within a few miles of each other a couple of times back in the day, just never met. I informed him I always felt a bit better in the field knowing the Rangers/Berets were in the area and how locked-on they were (Op Just Cause). When he was our instructor for the day, I'd arrive like 45 minutes early, and he was already there. Our eyes would meet and we'd both smile knowing we may be from different branches yet the training was the same and the level of mutual respect was confirmed. I think my biggest take away knowing John was how humble and calm he was in the face of a killer called cancer. "One day at a time" he'd say with nothing but praise for his medical team, and the support of his family. I told him, "I don't know how you do it, I'd be insane." His response was "No, you'd be a Marine."

I only knew John for a brief period as a student of the Leadership Effectiveness Accountability and Development (LEAD) training class at VA Puget Sound. He had such a nice demeanor and approach to educating that made you feel good about learning while creating safe spaces and not being overly critical. He was tough as nails too as I remember he had chemo infusing while teaching the class, but no one would have known if he hadn't mentioned it and never seemed to phase him. I always felt a nice kinship with him like he could have been a long lost uncle. Seeing our common experiences of University of Arizona and Tucson life before moving to Seattle along with endurance sports, i can see now why. He was an amazing person with great character. I really appreciate what he taught and gave to others. He will be missed.

John was a trusted friend and professional. He was a true soldier and a patriot. I am very lucky to have known him and worked with him. Men with his integrity and work ethic seem to be in short supply these days. I know that those young men and women he trained for so many years will carry forward much of the same.

I served with John in A/3/10 at Ft Devens in the early 80´s. I remember John as one of the most intelligent and physically fit SF soldiers in the Company. I am very proud to have served with him. In the past few years, I have started a Facebook account and was thrilled to have been able to connect again with John after all the years that have gone by since Ft Devens. John was an extraordinary man who accomplished so much during his lifetime. My condolences to John´s family. RIP, John, DOL.

I worked with John at the U of A. He ran the leadership development program in a way that could get exceptional results from cadets of all ability levels. He left a strong impression on all who were fortunate enough to call him a mentor. Rest in peace, my friend.

I met John later in his life as a coworker. As a USAF veteran I fondly recall all the friendly pain he caused me at the U.S. Air Forces expense. A great man with a solid heart and a lifetime of wisdom. I'm genuinely glad I was afforded the opportunity to be his friend.

We were supposed to call him "Mr. Crump" as cadets because he was retired, but we always said MAJ Crump because we respected him that much. My favorite memory is the senior class putting up a "fat head" of MAJ Crump on the ROTC building. The fact we blew up a poster and put in our lounge of MAJ Crump is testimony to how much we loved him. I´m so sad. He spoke highly of Jill. And I´m so sorry for your loss.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of John's passing. I met John while also with the ROTC program at the UofA and I can't share one good memory of him because there are so, so many. I was the embodiment of the term leader. He truly cared about the cadets and they all cared about him. I'll just say that John was never "that guy"... and John, I know you known what I mean. Thanks for the memories.

In 2007 I joined the Staff at the University of Arizona Army ROTC. My first FTX was in the Fall, I noticed a few things that where important for the FTX sitting in the supply room and I begain to gather them together. Maj. Crump came in and said stop being an NCO and let them figure it out when they got down to Ft. Huachuca.
Right then I started to laugh and let's see what happens, lesson learned. Let them figure things out for themselves.

Jill - I am so sorry for your loss. When John began his fight, he knew the battle would be hard, but he always knew that every day alive would be worth the fight. I know how hard you fought alongside John - thank you for your love and commitment. We will miss him...
