John William Curran

John William Curran, 88, of Melrose, MA, previously a proud lifelong resident of Jersey City, passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, 2022 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, MA. John was born July 26, 1934 in Jersey City, NJ to John and Mary Curran. John graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1952 and Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University) in 1976. He served as a mortarman in the United States Army from 1954-56 stationed in Germany. Next he joined the Jersey City Police Department where he was a founding member of the Emerald Society and served as its president in 1975-76. He retired after a 34 year career at the rank of Captain. He then worked ten more years in the Hudson County Sheriff's Department. John was married for 58 years to his loving wife, Margaret Curran, who predeceased him in 2021. He is survived by his children, Dr. Colin Curran and his wife, Dr. Maggie Curran, of Greer, SC; Maureen and her husband, Rod Honecker, of Brielle, NJ; Sean Curran and his wife, Robin, of Melrose, MA; and Dr. Terrence Curran and his wife, Kathy, of Cranford, NJ; as well as six cherished grandchildren, John, Caroline, Molly, Emma, Jessica and Nolan. John is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Ray Robertson, and his dear nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Joan Kerr. John and his wife raised their family in the Jersey City Heights and were parishioners at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church where their children attended grammar school. Summers were spent at the Jersey Shore in the Eagle Point community of Brick. John was devoted to physical fitness and was a member of the YMCA in Jersey City and then Bayonne. He loved baseball and was a fan of the Washington Senators and New York Mets. He and his wife enjoyed dancing at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan and on cruises to Bermuda. John took great pleasure in reading, attending family celebrations and reminiscing about his childhood in downtown Jersey City. He also liked his Pecan Sandies with a can of Pepsi. The family thanks the staff at The Residence of Melrose and the Kaplan Family Hospice House for their excellent care of John. Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ. A service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
