John DeVos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2022.
Dr. John Burnell "Jim" DeVos of Round Lake Beach died on Friday, May 6th 2022 at Condell hospital in Libertyville, IL at the age of 89. He was surrounded by his family.
John was born on March 21, 1933 in Hinsdale, IL to John Abraham and Joanne Rose (Weiss) DeVos. He attended Hinsdale Township High School and went on to Wake Forest University, and Northwestern University, culminating in a DDS degree. He was the sixth-man, a defensive specialist, on Wake Forest's 1953 conference champion basketball team, he was a boisterous Demon Deacon mascot for the football team, and was an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
He married Marya Hoeglund on April 11, 1958. They went on to raise a family in Libertyville, where he enjoyed a 30+ year career as a dentist, served as a youth group counselor and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, and was active on the school board for Hawthorn school, and in the Rotary Club. He pursued his love of music throughout his entire life.
He was known for his giving nature, his ever-present sense of humor, and his reliance on the reparative properties of duct tape. He passed his love of music, dogs, and his sense of humor to all his kids. His and Marya's kindness and generosity earned them a large extended family of their kids' peers.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years Frenesi, his children John (Nancy), Mark (Pam), Owen (Lisa) and Marya (Larry) Fletcher; his grandchildren Ian, Noah, Isabel, and Tenley; his sisters Suzanne and Kathryn, and abundant nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marya Hoeglund, his brother Brice, and his parents.
A celebration of John's life is planned for Saturday, June 11. Please contact [email protected] for details.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society, or the ASPCA.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim's death. We were close neighbors for many years in Libertyville. My children played with Jim's children and have many wonderful memories of the good times we all had together. Jim's first wife, Marya, was a dear friend of mine. I haven't seen Jim in many years, so I never met Frenishi. My sincere sympathies to Frenishi, John, Mark, Owen and Marya. With many hugs to them all.

I´m so sorry to hear John passed. He was such a sweetheart! I loved having him and Frenesi as neighbors at Beech Pointe. He will be greatly missed.

Thinking of all the family at this time. So many wonderful memories of a family of love and kindness. I remember the treasure chest of toys at the dentist office to the always welcoming home to hang out at in libertyville. The coolest dad to let us write all over the walls on the basement staircase. What an amazing father!

john was one of my biggest heroes in our class of 1951 at Hinsdale Township High School He was outstanding as an athlete, academics, personality, and generous spirit as Master of Ceremony at all of our Class Reunions for over 50 years. Goodbye John - someday we will all plan another Class Reunion in heaven!

Frenesi, John, Mark, Brice, Mari, May God´s peace envelop you all. I could always count on Uncle Jim for a good belly laugh and a different point of view; he was an amazing wit and had a wicked sense of humor! I shall miss him dearly.
