John Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 27, 2023.
John Patrick Dun John Patrick Dunn, 83, was called home to be with his Lord on April 19, 2023, in Virginia Beach, VA. John was born in Grand Forks, ND on May 27, 1939, to the late Harold. E. and Mabel M. Dunn.

He attended St. Michael's grade school and was a 1957 Graduate of St. James H.S., in Grand Forks, ND. He was a 1962 UND Graduate with BS in Business Adm. and was a 1964 Graduate of the University of ND School of Law. He entered the military in June 7, 1965 serving the JAG Corps with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions and was a proud 'Screaming Eagle' Parachutist serving two tours in Viet Nam and an overseas tour in Korea. He retired from the army as a Lt. Colonel on January 1, 1987.

John was married to Sylvia Vandenberg in 1968 having three children Angela, Derek, and Jason who he cherished with his whole heart, and they were his greatest joy. In 1981 he married Marjorie Bunton, and he became a stepdad to her 6 daughters and Grandpa to her many Grandkids. John married Karen Buchanan in 2010 and together they shared their love of church and community.

John was a faithful servant who spread the word of God through his prayers, cards, books, and ministries he supported and served. He led by example and touched the lives of others, never seeking attention to himself. John loved to tell a story or two and his jokes to all he met and he brought laughter and humor to many in various situations. His stories and jokes will live on in our hearts.

He is survived by his former wife Sylvia Vandenberg, his wife Karen Lee Dunn, his children: Angela Anderson (Mark); Derek Dunn (Susan); Jason Dunn (Jennifer), Step-daughters: Lou-Ellen Phillips; Elizabeth Miller; Royce Geogiades (John); Martha Hughes (Dale), Stepsons: Bryan Lowe, and Chris Lowe, 9 Grand Children: Ethan Dunn, Erika Dunn, Erin Dunn, Samuel Price, Hope Slough (Logan), Jason Patrick Dunn, Alex Anderson, Colton Anderson, Justin Anderson, 30 Step -Grandchildren, Sisters Kathleen (Kay) Homstad; Mary Beth (Art) Jerome; Bridgie (Glenn) Hansen; Nancy (Steve) McDermott; 18 nieces and nephews, and 4 cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marjorie Dunn, brother James L. Dunn, Stepdaughters, Denise Clark and Mary Pritchard.

Mr. Dunn was an incredible human being. He has blessed our family in so many ways over the past 15 years. I´ll miss the way he would always check in on our kids, and never fail to share a story about his own children and grandchildren. And the pile of cards he would have inevitably collected to give to my daughter. Such a powerful, thoughtful, spiritual and kind man he was. Prayers for all of his family and friends.

I recently got married March 24th and I am forever grateful my grandfather, John Dunn, was in attendance. I am so thankful my husband was able to meet my grandfather and to see the impact he has made in my father and my life. Your love for our family and Christ will be remembered for eternity. Love you Grandpa
