Dear Candy, John, and Tate,
I still cannot believe John is gone. I think back to when I was at Clemson and met John when I came to see Candy in Columbia decades ago. He was always so kind and fun to be around. Our mother absolutely loved John, as we all did. I can just see John and my parents up in Heaven now discussing the world today. Their political discussions were always lively and thank goodness they shared the same views. The world has lost a great man. Tate and John, I know he was so proud of you both. I will miss him dearly. My love to all 3 of you and Samantha as well. Please know that you can call me anytime and I will fly up there if you need me. Paul and I will be there in October.
Love, Gay Lynn

I received one of the worst phones I have ever received earlier today. My sister Candy called me with a broken heart to let us know that John, her husband and best friend forever passed away unexpectantly in his sleep this morning. Our family has been blessed to have fantastic inlaws, motherinlaws , fatherin laws, brother in laws and sister inlaws, nieces, nephews, and cousins . And I love them all like their my very own....One thing we ALL can say is that John Fennell was loved and respected by ALL. He was a true Southern Gentleman. I was very proud to call him my brother in law, my friend , my buddy, but most of all he was one hell of a husband to my sister Candy and father to his two sons, John and Tate. Even though he got on them for riding their bicycles down the big stair case in the big old house, he always had that look and laughter that was very contagious. John, thank you for all the good times, fishing times, hunting times, tailgating times, and parking lot times...but most of all thank you for always taking care of my sister in good times as well as bad times......you were always there for Candy, Tate , John, your brother and sisters, your mom , and my mom and dad , the boys, as well as all my family., and ALL of your many friends. Thank you for being one of the best brother in laws one could ever have. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

Uncle John has always been one of my favorite people! He was most kind-hearted southern gentleman I've ever met - and always made sure we were taken care of anytime we were in Columbia.

He loved South Carolina and the city of Columbia more than anyone. I always looked forward to his stories and history lessons from across the region - and especially his authentic southern accent! Our favorite Charleston story was the one about the (true) "big fish" he caught that you could actually find hanging on the wall at the hotel marina! Not only did he have an endless supply of knowledge, he knew the state like the back of his hand. I could call him from anywhere and he would have a favorite place to stop by and the best directions to avoid traffic on the was to out next destination!

It is always too soon when we lose loved ones... he had a wonderful life and loved his family dearly. I know he'll be forever watching over the farm and enjoying every minute of it. We will all miss him dearly but he will always be in our memories!
