Madison - John Edward Galvin, age 86 of Madison, IN passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024 at The Waters of Georgetown in Georgetown, IN. He was surrounded by his loving family. John was born December 10, 1937 in Paducah, KY. He relocated to Madison in 1960 and married his college sweetheart Maureen Catherine Finneran Galvin. John Galvin became a dedicated advocate for this community and left an indelible mark through his tireless work, particularly with Historic Madison, Inc. John's deep love for Madison was evident in his unwavering commitment to its growth and prosperity. His contributions to the city were recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious "Distinguished Hoosier Award" from Governor Frank O'Bannon and the title of "Sagamore of the Wabash" for his exemplary leadership and service. Additionally, he received the President's Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, celebrating his role in leading one of the nation's most outstanding historic preservation organizations. John Galvin will be remembered not only for his significant achievements in historic preservation but also for his 30+ years as owner of the Ohio Theatres and Skyline Drive-In Theatre. He leaves behind a legacy of great community pride and dedication. John Galvin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maureen Finneran Galvin; four children, The Rev Michael Galvin (Rachelle Galvin) Fishers, IN; Sheila Galvin (Martha Brennan) Louisville, KY; Sean Daniel Galvin (Sara Galvin) Louisville, KY, Maureen Megan Galvin Pershing (William Pershing) of Columbia, SC and six grandchildren. A visitation will be held for John Galvin on Friday, October 25, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church (an HMI property). A Funeral Mass will be held for Galvin on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 413 East Second Street in downtown Madison. The Rev. Chris Craig will officiate. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. Michael's Cemetery in downtown Madison, Indiana.
